Description I think it's important to know who are the parents of the character. To know who they are is to know what surroundings your character was raised. In this case, it was a loving family. Gary Oths mechanic at a gas station. He is sort of an inventor with a couple of patents used by the small local factory. He is talented yet tends to get obsessed with his ideas and spend a lot of time and money on them. Usually, without notable results as new obsession force him to abandon the old one. Lydia loves him and spends a lot of time helping with his projects. Usually, they spend entire weekends in the garage building something together. Lucy Oths waitress at the roadside diner. She is the responsible one and thinks she has to make everything she could to make the life of her family better. Usually, she ends up working overtime to earn more money. Sometimes she gets frustrated by her husband's spendings but she still loves him. After work, she often sits at the chair in the garage and watches how her husband and daughter work on something, falling asleep smiling after long working hours.

When I first designed them they were supposed to be dead. But after some time when I added more traits and personality, I decided that to kill them will be a huge waste. So I changed it.
They are not dead. They were separated from their daughter when the Plague started and now they are trying to find her.

so, back in this photo she isn't mutated but she's still albino, so I'm guessing she was born albino?

You are correct. She was born albino and she had bad sight and asthma most of her life. But it didn't stop her from being a really active child.

Вообще да, но я сейчас почти не играю. То немногое свободное время, что у меня есть, я предпочитаю тратить на творчество.
Лидия мне показалась достаточно интересным персонажем, чтобы получить свою собственную художественную историю, вот и начал развивать её не как фанарт, а как самостоятельного персонажа по мотивам игрового.

Oh yeah, I think parents are super important in char dev! It was at home where folks pick up their morals and habits; it's also a realistic way to explain how some characters turned out the way they did. Despite their quirks, I bet Lyria's parents did a good job!

Fantastic job on this piece. The colors work well, the blurred background is immersive, and the emotion runs thick. You're really skilled at telling a story with your art. Looking at this family photo, I can't help but wonder what happened with Lydia, and her parents, the whole apocalypse setting. It's great, and I'm excited to see-- and learn!-- more.

I think Lydia deserves to have her own story rather than being simply a fan character from some game

Sometimes the funniest things start out like that! I know that some of my best characters started out as one-off jokes or lighthearted fan stuff. "Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead" looks like a really neat game, by the way! How much of Lydia's character actually happened in-game? Kudos to this girl for surviving in that environment, omg...! Don't think I'd last a day, haha.

Her appearance, her basic traits, transport and big part of her story are based on what happened in game. Only thing is she mutated when I found couple of mutagen flasks and wanted to try it out. In narrative I think about an accident in the lab she raided for supplies.

It was really fun run with beating zombie dogs to death with an umbrella. Chasing from town to town in search for inhalers. Attack of flaming eye that destroyed her first vehicle so she had to move on foot back to town. On the way back she was attacked by several giant wasps and barely survived by finding hidden "last man on earth" shelter with some weapons and supplies. Moving 4 heavy wheels across half of the town to brocken RV to fix it. Fixing it and making real home out of it. Finding broadsword in some pawn shop and learning to use it. Then I've found couple of dead scientists and some monster. Ran it over with my then armoured RV. Then I've found mutagen serum flask. Was curious. Used it. Got Long Fingernails, Lightly Furred and Tentacle Legs mutations. At first I was confused. But then I've tried to imagine how will these three mutations will look with her initial Albino and Pretty traits. And then the "Quiet momen" picture was born and I've sort of fell in love with this character. Some random events in the game and my imagination made awesome character I want to make a world around with a lot of stories.

Aww man that is SO AWESOME, hahaha! The world threw everything but the kitchen sink at poor Lydia, props to this girl for her survival skills. It's really special when a game can give you so much creative fuel. I've only felt this with Rimworld , but never anything enough to inspire a whole character/story. I'm excited to see where Lydia's story goes!

Do you know of any guide or resource for learning to play Dark Days Ahead? The 80s-90s play style looks like it'd be hard to (re)learn, but I'd love to give this game a whirl!

Dwarf Fortress is great game too. Had a lot of colorful characters and situations in my fortresses

To me, any parental figure is important for OC's development, be it a parent, a mentor, a step parent, or someone else. Even if character is some sort or runaway or orphan.

Kind of.  It gives the character a better history.  Stuff like, 'Did their parents love them, or were they viewed as an albatross?  Who was the stricter parent, mom or dad?'

And yes. Any bit of OC's info is important at top priority because this is an OC, and the (only) way to understand her is to try and live inside of her skin. And that's impossivle to be correct if we losen up even a tiny bit.
