Description I'm planning a little tutorial on designing sequential art at the moment- and figured I'd do a step by step example to show the various concepts better. This is my uber-rough first draft on letter size paper for page 2 (out of 3) where I'm first deciding what I want in each panel, the basic shape I want them to be and what ordered they'd be in.. that's a lot to figure out at once so the actual drawings are only scribbly sketches.
I know I should be planning a more basic tutorial instead, cause sequentials are pretty advanced and are one of those things that you think will be easy but then realize there's a whole lot of stuff you need to keep in mind besides the actual drawing. I can think of several things I want to change in each panel already (especially the middle one, ugh). I just find storytelling through images incredibly interesting and wanted to practice myself with something simple.

oh- the story (well, short scene) is from one of sunstar's fics- hopefully she doesn't mind me taking it.. it also conveniently works with the seekers of iacon pic I've been working on- so perhaps I may have a splash page #4.

Hey draw what you want. Took me a few moments to figure out what scene this was... Just after he left iacon and was threatening Overcast. Looks cool.

ok cool, I'm not good with the whole 'make an interesting short scene' thing, illustrating is more my game.
yeah that's the scene It will be a lot more apparent once this is sandwiched between the other pages, and the dialogue has been put in, and uhh, the artwork doesn't suck. That scene actually works quite well for a tutorial because it's pretty short (yet a few paragraphs still ended up being 3 pages), has one main action occuring, and some spoken dialogue. Plus I got to throw in some transformation sequences at the end, w00t!

Not sure why you say your artwork sucks in the rough draft... my good copies are your rough drafts.
I had to take a moment and see who the key chars were and I was aaaaah right chap 13...

I find this all very interesting. I get a chance to see how someone else sees my fic and their interpretation of what sort of activities went on. I am very interested in seeing this tutorial when it is done. Do you have a website to host it on?

well, this is truly rough, I mean, the smaller characters are like little blobs . Soon I'll be moving on to doing the second rough work on much larger paper though and hopefully tighten everything up. I was actually thinking about extending what I was doing at the beginning to include the part where SS and sunburst are inside his room- right now I just have it starting at the point where they leave the building. I don't like the fact that the way I sliced the scene has sunburst saying nothing.. so someone not familiar to the story might think they are a couple and sunburst is very passive- which is far less interesting than the truth .
I was actually thinking about writing some of the tutorial tonight- although it wouldn't be the part with the examples quite yet. I thought I'd use my example to show the various techniques and camera angles that can be used to convey certain moods to the viewer. I love interpreting words into the visual language so this is pretty fun to me, although challenging work at the same time .

I'll probably set up some crappy ass webpage to host the tut (and others that are more basic once I get to them).. my BF is the computer wiz with the webspace so that shouldn't be a problem.

Hey you have the skills. I am impressed with what I have seen so far. Yeah... Sunburst and Screamer are not a couple... heh.

Speaking of hosting stuff... I'd like to host your two interpetations of Sunburst and Overcast on my site. If that is permissable. Your "rough" sketches are great. I need to actually consider doing a links page too. When you get that tuturial up I will make sure I link it there.

yeah I didn't want to imply that SB and SS were a couple, 'cuz that's just asking for groans . Tis ok though, I managed to plot out 2 pages for the inside scene showing them bitching at each other.. and hopefully I made it look visually interesting (that's hard when something is mostly dialogue).

You can host the pics of SB and Overcast if you want, heh, those are pretty rough though. The overcast one isn't bad, but the sunburst one I didn't even get to deciding what her alt-mode would look like, it's just sort of doodled in . I just do those concept sketches so if I'm doing a more complex pic I have something to look back on for reference.
The tutorial may take a while for me to get to finishing, cause now it's pretty long (5 comic pages- who knows how much writing), but sure, you can link to it .

Yeah, they might be rough but they are very good rough drawings. I have linked them to my site... Marked as concept drawings, although there are one or two things I would like to alter in their text as soon as I get a bit more imaginative. 5 pages? Whoa, that's alot of sketching, drawing etc.

Goooood luck D

aww, you said nice things about my cruddy pics- I blush *tee-hee*. If I were to change one thing about the text with the Sunstar pic though- I would say though that she is based more on Don Figuroa's war within designs rather than Galaxy Force Starscream, simply because GF Screamer is based on Don's original design, so he should get the credit .

Yeah 5 pages is a heck of a lot- considering in comics it might take a penciller an entire day to do 1 page from start to finish.. and he's not even doing the inking and colouring . But then, these aren't going to be super-fantastic quality are anything like that. I've posted my first thoughts for the tutorial in a journal entry, just the basic stuff I don't need visual examples for.

Ok, I will see that he gets the design credit

I just tried a screamer sketch again... I've been slacking for a while since I can't draw when inspriation does not strike.

gonna be fascinating...
