Description Ah well, this is gonna take some explaining

So firstly, its not "on fire" rather.. its just very very dirty technology. I always wanted to do something like this to one of my ships and scenes (mainly because i love setting things on "fire", virtually, of course ,p)

And also because i did not even intend for this to be a realistic ship of any kind, but the ocean before and the light setup made it look rather bland, even though it has lots of details...

Point being i wasn't happy with either of the 3 submissions thus far - but i think this one is finally the first thats actually kind of balanced - also i made the front ever so slightly less edgy, the wood now has more usage dirt (barely noticeable )

And i changed the way the ocean works a 3rd time.. awesome, let me just quickly mention something else. If you watch my uploads you may know i made that Steam Fishing vessel, and that ocean looks fairly nice... yeah it does.
The problem is, ever since i updated to Cinema 4D R11.5 the plugin i used to make the waves does no longer work. So thats why i am struggling to make a decent looking ocean again. And even in that steam fishing ship i photoshopped and literally REPAINTED the entire ocean, something i have no idea how i did it, but for that 1 scene it worked, for this one, it doesn't.

This is also my 666th image i submitted to DA I wanted it to be something like this, and not a WIP in my scraps

I like it, dirty tech is always fun and "Different" any chance I can see the mesh? I've been learning modeling using Blender and I learn so much from seeing other folks' meshes, even if I can't put them into blender.

Sure, well for now its not really the mesh but the making off via WIPS

Will see if i can make a rendering with wireframe.. i updated my applications lately so things work kinda wonky atm

I know you are not looking for advice from an amateur but if I may be so bold... you are an amazing artist and I love everything that you put out... but it seems like you suffer when atmosphere comes into play... just at first glance fog isn't choppy... that would be low hanging clouds... Fog is denser and as such usually has a smooth almost smoky consistency/look to it. If your waves won't work... consider reflecting the stars off the water... I LOVE the ship!!!

Don't worry about it I fully realize the "fog" is a joke here, its only there to hide the water. Sometimes theres compromises to be made and it was either ugly fog or really ugly water.

Probably requires some actual effort on my part to finally make a water shader that does not look weird

Just thought I would offer up an alternate perspective. If you would ever like a more private review send me a note.

This is wonderful! I have to say I didn't like the ocean on the last one at all but this is really good, the fog/smoke obscures the unnaturally smooth water. The model is great, super detailed and very well textured. The fire is lovely and really gives an air of steampunk alternate WWI/WWII era technology.

Hah thanks Yeah i didn't like that ocean either.. its a curse with water and 3d.. no idea how others are doing it, but for me nothing i do with oceans works

I had so much trouble making good 3D water, I finally just stopped trying to do it, and started using Terragen [link] and VUE [link] (Both have useful free versions) to make my water.

Thats a very good idea.. sadly when you use Vue integration in C4D you end up having to use Vue's atmosphere settings (which affect GI/Shadows/AO) .. it might be worth to mess around with it though

I always just rendered out 2 images, and have my 3D modeling program save my model's render (in this case the ship) with a good 8 bit Alpha so I can just drop the model on the background and be done with it... of course, if you don't have Photoshop or something similar it can be somewhat more difficult.

On the other hand, I like Vue's atmospheric effects and soft shadows much better than XSI's (when set to maximum), and I know how to set the GI and AO on a per-object basis to XSI's standard Mental Ray renderer instead of Vue's system... so I could do both if I needed to.

But really, rendering in multiple Passes is done by all the movie and effects houses because it's the easiest and fastest (and often times the best looking and most flexible) way to combine multiple layers of effects and objects.

Woaw! looks so nice!
and since i found a lot of pluggins that work fine with R11.5 i don't feel like i'm ready to move on with R12 or even R13...
but i must confess i feel tempted to try this one [link] geez...

Yeah.. theres that too

Another issue i have is that i can't seem to render Alpha maps with the Shadows included - if i use object buffers, i end up with with a properly "occluded" alpha map (by the water) but the shadows are gone (which means i can't easily protect the shadow outline from editing)

I think i probably have to learn to use all the advanced multi-image things in C4D...

i actually managed to render the shadows separately on R11.5 ... but just once (fortunately i didn't need to do that again so far), as far as i know, there's something like a shadow's pass, but it never worked for me, hope you got more luck

Yeah i never understood the multi-pass dialog, my image often doesn't look like it should even though i have the "correct" order and passes selected.
