I know you are not looking for advice from an amateur but if I may be so bold... you are an amazing artist and I love everything that you put out... but it seems like you suffer when atmosphere comes into play... just at first glance fog isn't choppy... that would be low hanging clouds... Fog is denser and as such usually has a smooth almost smoky consistency/look to it. If your waves won't work... consider reflecting the stars off the water... I LOVE the ship!!!

Just thought I would offer up an alternate perspective. If you would ever like a more private review send me a note.

This is wonderful! I have to say I didn't like the ocean on the last one at all but this is really good, the fog/smoke obscures the unnaturally smooth water. The model is great, super detailed and very well textured. The fire is lovely and really gives an air of steampunk alternate WWI/WWII era technology.

I had so much trouble making good 3D water, I finally just stopped trying to do it, and started using Terragen [link] and VUE [link] (Both have useful free versions) to make my water.

Thats a very good idea.. sadly when you use Vue integration in C4D you end up having to use Vue's atmosphere settings (which affect GI/Shadows/AO) .. it might be worth to mess around with it though

I always just rendered out 2 images, and have my 3D modeling program save my model's render (in this case the ship) with a good 8 bit Alpha so I can just drop the model on the background and be done with it... of course, if you don't have Photoshop or something similar it can be somewhat more difficult.
On the other hand, I like Vue's atmospheric effects and soft shadows much better than XSI's (when set to maximum), and I know how to set the GI and AO on a per-object basis to XSI's standard Mental Ray renderer instead of Vue's system... so I could do both if I needed to.
But really, rendering in multiple Passes is done by all the movie and effects houses because it's the easiest and fastest (and often times the best looking and most flexible) way to combine multiple layers of effects and objects.

Woaw! looks so nice!
and since i found a lot of pluggins that work fine with R11.5 i don't feel like i'm ready to move on with R12 or even R13...
but i must confess i feel tempted to try this one [link] geez...

Yeah i never understood the multi-pass dialog, my image often doesn't look like it should even though i have the "correct" order and passes selected.
