Description (Originally posted in 2008.)

This piece was done for Kadanzer Weyr ([link] ), as a prize in the monthly comments contest for Leia, owner of Lina and Tayath. They're a weyrling pair getting ready to take their first flight. (And yes, Tayath is going to look a bit top-heavy with Lina sitting up on her neck. But she'll still be able to fly; thank goodness that Pern dragons have telekinesis to help them get off the ground and lift anything that they think they can! )

Medium is pen and ink with Copic marker coloring, and then a lot of further effects work in Photoshop. (The background is just a filtered photo.)

I think this is arguably your best work (though I must admit I am bias towards dragons) ^.^

Thank you!

This one is definitely my favorite of the Pern things I've done in the last few years. Slightly frustratingly, it was the FIRST of that spate of pieces I did, too -- which means that the three other dragon pieces I did after it just didn't come out QUITE as well (IMO, too). Something about this one... everything came together just right and pretty much came out just right, and the coloring on it is still kind of something I look at and think, "wow, I did that? I like that!"

Trivia -- the original Copic coloring of the dragon is blue. At the time, I didn't have quite the range of green markers that I wanted, so I did the dragon all in blues, and then after scanning, entirely changed the hue.

I think there are a combination of reasons why this one turned out so well compared to the others, which don't get me wrong, they are also great pictures, but this one is far superior.

The stance of the dragon seems more fluid. It looks like the dragon was actually moving when you captured her in her pose. The way her leg is raised, her head lifted, her partially folded wings, and the view you drew her in, it all seems so natural. The movement in the rider is also repeated, especially in the way you made Lina's hips sit, that fluid sway. It all adds to the motion of the portrait.

Also, I think the background has a great deal to adds to this illusion of movement. The direction the wind is blowing in the trees, and how the dragon seems like she is pushing back against it, as well as her rider. Again, it makes that movement more evident. It's like it is playing a trick on the eyes.

As for the coloring, even though you redid the color on the computer, the coloring still came out marvelous. In this picture compared to say Ryuri and Ceorth, and T'syr and Yengarth, there is more highlighting involved. You have more diversity within the hue that makes the dragon stand out more. Like in Tayath's muzzle, face, and her neck ridges, you added the lighter highlights, not to mention the dappling of sun struck green in her neck and belly. Yet, there are also the dark tones throughout the body, which if left by themselves it would not do much, but add in the lighter highlights, there is more of a contrast. Even in Lina, these lighter tones are seen throughout her garments, her face, and her hair. I think something a lot of artists forget is the importance of highlights in shading. But in this piece you achieved this.

I think the only area that could be "improved on," which is improved on in your picture of Aria and Jaharath, is the use a darker shade to emphasize the effect of shadow, especially around and under the wings, and along the back of the neck. The darker shading is very visible in Lina, but not as much in Tayath. However, I don't know if it's even possible to do that to Tayath with marker without destroying the piece. But that is all, and as I said before this piece is still very incredible.
