MOON KNIGHT
Moon Knight started as an opponent who could survive a fight with a werewolf in the pages of WEREWOLF BY NIGHT, written by the excellent Doug Moench. He got a two-issue tryout in MARVEL SPOTLIGHT, then guest-starred in the classic "Who Remembers Scorpio?" storyline in DEFENDERS. A rising star, he was pegged for his own feature in the back of the now-color HULK magazine. After two issues, writer Moench was joined by superstar-to-be artist Bill Sienkiewicz (and the best inkers and superstar colorist Steve Oliff)--and, all of a sudden, the Moon Knight feature was the very best that comics had to offer. After a year and a half there (and also one headlining appearance in b&w magazine MARVEL PREVIEW), Moon Knight was given his own comic series. Before too long, MOON KNIGHT became Marvel's first direct sales only comic and increased pages and sported fantastic wraparound covers by Sienkiewicz. Ultimately, Moench and Sienkiewicz moved on and the magic was over. MK has been through many ups and downs through the years (including his own show on Disney+)--mostly downs actually as editors and creatives seem willing to do anything to distance him from being "Marvel's Batman" but for a brief shining time in the early 80's, MOON KNIGHT was the best there was.
