SHAZAM
When Billy Batson spoke the magic word Shazam, he turned into Captain Marvel, the world's mightiest mortal! Soon joined by his sister Mary Marvel and friend Captain Marvel Jr., the Marvel Family was the core of Fawcett Comics' very successful line of comics throughout the 1940's, outselling even SUPERMAN. But Superman eventually beat the "Big Red Cheese"...in court, as DC Comics finally put Fawcett out of the super-hero business in the early 1950's. But DC would license their biggest foe and bring him back in the early 1970's in the SHAZAM (the name change necessary after Marvel Comics snatched the defunct "Captain Marvel" name in the 1960's for the alien hero Mar-Vell) and short-lived TV show of the same name, and eventually buy him and the rest of Fawcett's super-heroes outright. He never regained super-star status in the comics, however, but the various runs (especially the E. Nelson Bridwell & Don Newton back-up stories from WORLD'S FINEST COMICS in the late 70's) have kept the love alive for Fawcett fans for decades, with two recent big motion picture successes adding to the fun for which the Captain and family have always been known.
