This Eastern Screech-Owl has made a home in my neighbor's tree. I shot from the driveway, from the back of his pick-up, and on top of the toolbox on the pick-up. In the fading light, shutter speeds were slow with a 500mm lens. Some movement in the photo, but OK for the circumstances, I thought.

Very cute pic. I love how you described what you had to do to get this shot. The bird was probably thinking you had a few screws loose! LOL I've sat on the hose bed of one of my fire trucks to get shots of stuff..what we do to get a good pic!

ASPimages [2007-10-24 14:38:29 +0000 UTC]

very nice. Camouflaged animals are among the hardest to capture. You've done a great job.

There are some motion artifacts and aliasing present in the out of focus areas in the bottom right and top left of frame. When the image is viewed in full, these could be a bit of a distraction. Easy way to remove is to use the blur tool (not the filters) in Photoshop to give it a smoother blur. Run it over both areas for a few seconds and it will have a great professional sheen.

Hi Adam!

Thanks for the tip with the blur tool. I've never used it much, but I can see the benefit in this case!!

Congratulations, that's quite a feat to capture the hootie so clearly with movement in the tree itself. You and the owl must have been on the same vibration! 500mm at 1/40 is quite an accomplishment. Without a tripod, I have trouble at 300mm at 1/60. Great owl! I will add him to my Wild Thing journal when I next update it.

Thanks much for the comment. Nice to know some folks see how much trouble this photo was...and hot much luck was involved, too, even though I tried to put myself in the right place at the right time.

RooCat In reply to ericthom57 [2007-10-23 02:24:36 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I was a bit surprised when the tree showed your shake but the owl didn't. Obviously, you and Hootie were on the same wavelength. S/he must have really wanted her/his photo taken. Just too cute an owl. I owls. You are most welcome. I know how many times I've failed on my lizards before getting a good one.
