LOL! Actually, it's a faux-HDR. I created it with a single frame using a program I found.

did you use RAW?

ericthom57 In reply to honolo [2010-01-11 03:28:55 +0000 UTC]

No. I shot a regular high-res JPEG file.
It was processed in a program called Qtpfsgui ( [link] ) which gives a simulated HDR look. Then I take the saved HDR file into PS Elements for levels, contrast, etc.

NP! When you do the tone mapping (you WILL want to do that after you create the HDR file from your original), I like the Mantiuk settings.
But play with the program....everything in it. Different things work better for different shots.

Great detail in the water and jetty. The shot has a chilly sense of foreboding; the water looks like it's shivering from the menace of the sky that threatens to unleash its fury and shatter the jetty to splinters.

The bit of blown-out sky at the top is my only little niggle with this otherwise engaging shot.

One other choice that I personally would make would be to somehow take the shot from higher up so that the jetty leads out to the water and doesn't cut into the bank/shore on the far side of the body of water. It just makes sense to me in a psychological way, if you get what I mean.

Thanks so much for the extensive comments! I agree that the blown-out sky is a bit distracting, but I've not been able to get any depth there (but I've not given up trying!).
As for the angle...excellent idea! Not sure how I'm going to accomplish that given the terrain of the shoreline, but it's worth a shot. Thanks for the suggestion!

I sigh and shudder a little to myself when I get a reply that says merely "nice!" or something as banal.

I only comment when I really like a photo and just have to say so; I also like to be a little original and actually say something useful/helpful/challenging with my comments and suggestions as I like to be challenged myself and given useful tips and suggestions on how I can improve certain shots.

Good luck with your future photographic endeavours, I'm off to mosey around your gallery for a bit. I'll be the one looking super-extra happy as my camera; which I thought lost to the world forever; was handed back to me today. Christmas came early for me.

P.S. Sorry if I rambled a bit here...

Glad to hear you got your camera back...that IS an early Christmas! I'd hate being without mine. I don't keep it with me all the time, but I like knowing I can get to it quickly.
Hope you found other shots in my gallery that you liked!
