Description Shooting wildlife -- true wildlife -- is not one of my stretngths. But on occasion an opportunity presents itself and I have to give it a shot.
In a fenced off conservation area just around the corner from my house, this osprey nest has been occupied for the last two years. This is the first time I've seen the chicks...and these guys are just about ready to fly. Just as I was getting out of my car, one adult then the other took off.
I hate the white-out sky behind these guys. Fortunately I had just a few minutes of golden, later-afternoon sun to illuminate these two.

how everything holds together, but it looks like it would just fall apart

Was the sky white when you took the picture, or was it an unexplained camera effect? Either way, it's a good capture. I like the way they look poised to move, particularly the one that's standing up - I half-expect it to jump into the air at any moment.

It was just a rotten, white sky...solid clouds, and I hated it. But I finally got the late light and the right poses from the birds, so I had to give it a shot.
Thanks much for the comments!

thats so cool . I used to have an eagle nest by my old place, but it was hard to see up there....though it wasnt always occupied as I hadnt really noticed eagles flying about that often.

I too wondered whether the background had been manipulated. As a keen watcher I know how hard it is to get close to these babies, whether in conservation areas or wild!

Wonderful photo.

Wow! Impressive that you managed to catch them, especially against such a light background. I thought that perhaps you had manipulated the sky somehow. I love the jumbled detail in the nest and the patterns on the bird's wings.

I've been watching these guys for weeks. The sky always seems to just suck when they're in the best place to shoot!
This conservancy area is about 8-10 acres (I'm guessing) right in the middle of several small subdivisions. And this nest is in the smack middle. I've been all the way around trying to find a better (closer) vantage point, but none is better than any other. Ideally, I'd like to be about 25 yards closer and about 30 feet up in the air!

Heheh, nesting birds HAVE to be a difficult subject and I can imagine only eagles and condors being more difficult. Good job anyway!

Yes, it is their nest...they've been using it a couple of years now. Shot this photo from the closest vantage point. It's in a conservancy area that's fenced off, so I had to use a 50-500mm lens. Not crazy about the lens, but it get me closest.
