The image, itself, is amazing, but upon reading some other critiques, I'd like to point out the lack of usage in the depth of field in the background. I like how the closest piece of the shot is out of focus, but everything else, the further you go back in the distance, is all still in focus. each layer/creature, as it is further from the viewer, ought to naturally become more and more blurred and out of focus. I would also like to see some sort of heat shimmer effect, which would add to the horizon line being more obscured, but that's just technical stuff from the POV of a photographer. I am an artist, too, and I fully comprehend the desire to make sure all the work you put into the background isn't lost in translation, but since it's a fantastical/fantasy style piece, and as clearly as the giraffe is marked, I don't think any level of lens blur/bokkeh/DOF would take away from the overall look and aesthetics. As one of the other critiques had mentioned, the hot sands to cool sky/water beyond the lighthouse is great contrast, and another critique mentioned this being the vision of a child of old gods moving across the earth/child's vision, that only a child can probably still see, since they aren't yet jaded by age.

Thank you for the critique! You're completely right about the DOF (and it is exactly as you say, I'm afraid it wouldn't work so well with the textures on the giraffe - and besides I'd lose a lot of details), but I haven't even tried to see how it looks. In truth, the foreground blur is a lot easier to pull off technically, which is why I often use one but not the other.
Also the heat shimmer is a really good idea, which I'll consider for sure in a potential update or a future artwork.
Thanks again for taking the time to write down your thoughts, it's much appreciated! Input from photographers and digital painters is actually exactly what I need because I believe that's what can help me take my art to the next level.

Do you still have this in it's original psd file? I'd love to tweak it to a photographer's perspective, if so. Only for your eyes.

It is spread over three psd-files each having 1.5 GB file size, so that's not going to happen. Thanks for the offer, though

My first critique, so if I offend, please forgive ....The Image is pops out among t the other thumbnails , because of the colors , I like the way foreground dips a bit and leads your eye to the boy.The main reindeer creature looks quite fantastical and majestic .....I guess the main issue that stands out for me is that the other creatures seem plain in comparison to the main creature , they are just big but nothing else besides the size indicate that they they are magical like they are not crossed with other animals etc ,Overall its a cool image ...well done

That is not quite the point of the artwork, but thanks anyway for taking the time to write down your thoughts about this work! Have a nice day!

Brilliant imagination you have and quite well depicted in this piece. However, I will point out a few things that you could work on to push it a little bit further.

You've got your colors on point, warm colors in the foreground and focus areas, cooler colors at the back. However, I think there should be a bit more transition between the two. The lighthouse and the level it sits on, you could add a bit of blue for a more cohesive bridge between the bright orange and the background. This in turn will additionally add more depth to your picture.

Secondly, the giraffe is drawing slightly too much attention to itself due to the value contrast between its rectangular spots and the white on the body. The straight clear lines of this pattern also contrasts the rest of the picture as there isn't anything as defined. All you need to do is pull the darkness of its spots back to a similar value to its surrounding background. Then it will look like it belongs in the background and still have a presence in the picture without distracting the viewer.

Lastly, as a smaller note, the snake's head is almost vertically parallel with the reindeer's antler. You should avoid parallels because they make a picture/subjects boring or even distracting to look at. I would shift the snake further to the right just so the two elements don't align even further.

In conclusion, a wonderful piece full of eye-catching colors and inspiring concepts. Just need to touch up a bit on the techniques but other than that, great work on this piece.

These are some good and useful points, thanks so much! Your critique encouraged me to make a quick update soon to address at least some of these points fairly quickly. Moving the snake will be awkward because I already have multiple files I'm working in, but I'm planning to reduce the details/contrast, which should help a bit and make the tangent less prominent.
Thanks again for pointing these things out and taking the time to write this up. It's much appreciated!

First, I will address what it looks like from a technical standpoint. The contrast of golden sand to a burnt blue sky creates a powerful, in your face feel to the piece. The fact that the feet of all the creatures are obscured by the horizon lends a feeling of unfathomable size. An impressive display of scale. A single point of critique is that the snake seems just a bit too stark. For how much distance is portrayed between the camera and the towering figures, I feel the snake should be slightly more blurred, similar to how one would blur the outline of a mountain in the distance. But that's just nitpicking. Finally, I will address how the picture makes me feel. Contrary to the title of the piece, my mind did not see this as glitched reality at all. This seems to me like a stately procession of elder gods, viewed through the innocent, wide eyes of the child in the foreground. All in all, surreal and fantastic, creative and dreamlike. Full marks from me. Well done.

I reworked the snake a bit: reduced the sharpen and contrast, and added a bit more haze...

I noticed. The improvement is noticeable and favorable. I have no more critique to give. Particularly since I can't do any better.

Thanks for the nice critique and the kind words! I believe you are right about the snake, I might give this one an update soon to fix the snake's details.

I'm curious what device you viewed this on? The "glitch" mostly shows in the details (there is a slight color displacement and some clipping errors that typically show in digital media), which are only visible in the full version on a large screen. Those small details give away that the little girl is in fact standing in a digital world, which she didn't realize before.

I was afraid that many people would not be able to get the concept if they were viewing the image on a portable small device, like a tablet or smart phone.

Thanks again for your thoughts about this piece! Cheers!
