Description watercolour

This is what happens when I try to use a limited palette... three different blues, three different browns, one green - I guess I'm getting a bit better but there's a long way to go! Still, I've been having fun doing lots of coffee painting lately, using different shades of the one colour has been fun. (Journal post still coming about that!)

It's beautiful the way you have to paint, really adorable
If you accept a review, all you have to improve is the face, it seems a bit long and the mouth is located somewhat below, or looks a little elongated... do not know
But everything else is perfect, really beautiful painting

This is a pretty piece! I think you did really well with the colors. I especially like the green in the tree (which has lovely knots), but it's also very appealing how the woman's dress has a blue hem to complement the background. I think the little stars on the tree branch are a cute idea, too

Thanks very much! It was fun to make the colours on her dress blend together

This is gorgeous!
I like how you have mixed warm tones and cold tones together! And it's very well done and you have successfully balanced those two together. I always have problems getting those both in same work.
And the limited palette works great on this! It doesn't need anything more. (: And that hair! Aaah I love it!

Haha yes painting hair is my favourite thing! I always leave it to last so that I can do the best bit at the end Thanks very much for the compliment on the warm and cold tones - I hadn't actually thought of it that way, just in terms of colours, so that's given me something to consider - cheers

There are some decent colours in here - browns and blues work really well together, always. I like the composition and generally the idea behind this work (:

Thanks very much! I always lean towards doing a yellow ochre wash over the whole paper before I start any pic, I just really love those yellow-y brown-y tones. I've started experimenting with different base colours to change the mood (eg. [link] and [link] , but it's hard to change

Oh yes, I'm trying to get out of my usual brownish/greenish washes, too. In my latest works in particular.

I really like your latest works, and the tones and colours are great. How do you get such dark darks with watercolours? Do you use black? Mine are always so bright, and I want to tone them down!

STelari In reply to erinclaireb [2013-06-09 12:19:14 +0000 UTC]

No, I don't use black except for things that are definitely black - like suits, for example. The muted tone comes from the fact that I've got plenty of graphite under watercolour.

Thanks very much for the tip - I've tried it out on my latest pic, I did the whole thing quite detailed in graphite before I put any paint on (usually I try to use as light and as little graphite as possible before I paint) and I really like the result! I will be doing more like this I think

It's really beautiful!!
I think it's always more harmonious when there is only few colours used!
Can I ask what is this drawing's size? (it seems to be my obsession )

Thanks very much! I'm going to try to cut down to even fewer, at least for a couple of paintings - I have to teach myself some discipline
This one is 25cm x 16cm

You did a great job! I like your use of the colors used. I especially like the creative a beautiful way you did the sky!

Thanks very much! It took me ages to be brave enough to use colours other than blue in the sky, but I think it works well

Lovely use of a limited palette, and I like the swirly knots (?) on the tree branches.
