Description Made for my mother past Mother's Day. She's an unbelievable Christie fan, so I cooked this up, simultaneously using the opportunity to further my drawing skills and experiment with a limited palette, here to reflect the 30's setting of the Queen of Crime's whodunnits. These are a few of her recurring detectives. From left to right:

-Jane Marple, a spinster from St. Mary Mead
-Mr Harley Quin, an enigmatic stranger who always seems present at scenes of drama (murder or otherwise), and acts as a catalyst for other bystanders to solve the mystery at hand
-Hercule Poirot, the famous Belgian detective
-Poirot's associate, Captain Arthur Hastings

I'm actually quite pleased with this one, concerning the style at least. Mister Quin is a failure in my eyes, he does not reflect the mystery that surrounds him in the books. Poirot is, however, exactly as I imagined him.

I love all these characters so much. Nice job, I was thrilled to find them all in one piece of art. You modeled Suchet as Poirot, I think? *points to my avatar* ...Poirot is my favorite AC character, and Hastings is adorable. XD Harley Quin is just awesome that way, and Miss Marple is NO push-over.

Great, you put me in obsessive mode. Thanks a lot. XP

Great work!

You're quite welcome. You've made my morning, haha! And if I have Suchet in my avatar it'd be anarchy not to have Brett in there too. He's awesome!

Question for you, are you familiar with the Nero Wolfe books?

Good man! David Suchet is a fantastic actor, glad you think so too.

One more thing; Joan Hickson appeared in a Marple story where Margaret Rutherford played Marple. Kind of funny knowing that she was going to eventually play the character herself in the future. [link] (I\'m only supposing that you might not know this)

Nope, not seen that one yet. Though I think it might be around here somewhere, as there are generations of Christie nuts in my family.

They should do a retooling of the whole Miss Marple thing. Instead of being old and frail she should be young and hot, maybe played by Angelina Jolie.

Indeed, she should also wear skin-tight latex suits and wreak Uzi-assisted vengeance on the despicable murderers she uncovers. These would be stored in the Marplemobile (an amphibious APC disguised as a gigantic clot of knitting ware), which in turn is hidden beneath the stove of herseemingly modest home in St Mary Mead.

I agree with you, but I think that she would still not dirty her hands with the actual killing. It's more dramatic to have her lips curl in a slow smile as her jack-booted militia drag the guilty away . Then, there would be the muffled crackling of a firing squad.

And tea and scones afterwards with the characters that survived the story. Oh, you're quite right.

Hmmm... I think it's already been done. It's called "Tomb Raider."

Yes, Christie was really at the top of her game when she wrote Tomb Raider.

Very nice. I must say that Miss Marple looks a bit rumpled as though she were awakened roughly to stand for the portrait. Poirot looks his usual cheerfully arrogant self, though.

Thanks. Poirot is quite easy to draw, actually. You just draw an egg with a smug and/or stern face on it. And add a pinguin-like body.

And you're completely right about Miss Marple, she's a dodgy piece of work to say the least.

Cool, haven't seen that one. Yet.
The ultimate Marple, in my opinion, is Joan Hickson. She is to Marple what David Suchet is to Poirot, she embodies everything from the novel and takes the doddiness and inquisitive expression to a whole new level. Have you seen any of her Marple stories? I have just watched the Caribbean Mystery/Nemesis arc, which is one of the best stories she's done.

Funny. I wonder if I'll ever post a piece you haven't got some interesting remark reserved for. Thanks Fro, you continue to make this interesting for me.

Actually, I'm not a particular fan of Christie's work; I just happened to be there when the movie started. (I have listened to several Poirot stories on audio read by Suchet himself. They were quite good, especially the one where Poirot has to go to Egypt to solve a murder and he never stops complaining about the heat, dust, etc. I think the set was called "The Challenges of Hercules" or something like that. Unfortunately, they are on tape and not CD or I would send you a copy.)

If presented with the possibility, make sure you SEE Suchet play Poirot. The dear man has mastered the role to such an extent that he can't even do interviews properly while in his make-up. He automatically reverts to Belgian accent mode.

Sorry to keep butting in on conversations here, but as the...slightly...obsessive...SLIGHTLY...er...anyway, as the fan of Suchet that I am, I love that little tibit right there--and he sounds so DIFFERENT with his natural voice, the man is incfredible. And I agree with you about Hickson, she's the best Marple there is (to the Marplemobile!). What do you think of the other Poirots and Marples?
