Description My little girl and I read tons together. And the other day at the library our expedition turned up the easy reader "Marvin K. Mooney Will You Please Go Now!" by Dr. Seuss.

I had forgotten how much I loved the picture of Marvin going in his Crunk-Car until I saw it again. And I own most of Seuss' books, but somehow this one had given me the slip. Anyway, the other day while my daughter and I were drawing together, I did my own version of Marvin and his Crunk-Car.

Incidentally, Seuss' vision of the Sneetches running through the star-on, star-off machines of Sylvester McMonkey McBean is the coolest illustration in all of children's literature in my opinion, but I would need more ambition to try to tackle that one.

Markers, chalk, pencils, crayons, ball point pen on chip board.

It is wonderful, and Seuss definitely gives one ideas for amazingly different illustrations.

There's just something about it that reminds me of Cheech Wizard from the 1970's National Lampoon magazines. Don't know why, just lights off those particular synapses.

I think they must've gone and published all his unpublished notes some time rather recently, because my daughter and I just checked out a big book of Seuss that has tons of stuff illustrated by other people in it that I don't ever recall from my childhood. Not his best stuff, but still fun.

The weapons from "The Butter Battle" and Sylvester McMonkey McBean's Star-On Star-Off machine, are probably some of the best machines ever drawn.

I remember some drawings from the old Lampoon stuff, but not the names. Sadly, I don't remember caring who any of the artists were in the beloved comics of my youth.

Love the piece - it has such an innocent and fun-loving feel to it - nice retro-ish robot design too!

It's practically cutting-edge modern compared to the drawing by Seuss! Ah, well. My take on a crunk-car.

I agree with you! Marvin K. Mooney was definitely one of my favorite Seuss characters! I can picture my mom raising her voice and pointing and shaking her finger while she read that book to me! Now see, you've gone and taken me back.

This is really cool, very well done. Although I love your pin ups, it's really cool to see something like this from you!

Thanks.

You can't overdo this kind of thing, though. If you do you'll just be another talent that nobody cares about. Because we all know that ultimately, men won't go for it unless they can have sex with it, or fantasize about having sex with it. And sex with a Crunk-Car is appealing to such a small audience.

There may be a crunk-car fetishist out there somewhere, but I sure don't want to meet him!

A great, fun, picture.

We have Marvin K. Mooney at home and my sons love it (no Zike Bike! ), so I'm glad to see it here. The last line of the book cracks me up for some reason.

It's very low key, the last line. I really expect there's some reason why he can't leave, but in the end, he just quietly takes the hint and goes.

This is one of those stories where no matter what the last line is, though, it can't be enough.

I have not seen the robot drawing club. I fulfilled their request to put this picture in their gallery, but other than you and that, I had not heard of them.

I'm probably not a great fit for that club though. Almost all my drawings are of sexy girls. There was one other robot I drew that appeared in my comic, "The Perils of Penelope Pornstarr," but it was pretty much a robot dildo, and not suitable for viewing by most people, I think.

Thanks for the compliments though!

Ah, the Sneetches. A classic, and I know just the illustration. The pic that I loved the most as a kid (and still do) is from the Sleep Book, where he shows the bed of a Jed, made of millions of pom poms he grows on his head. Something about the pom poms, and their gently illustrated texture, just fascinated me.

And the fact that there are millions of them.

Great work here, by the way. The sense of scale is wonderful!

And I know that illustration of which you speak quite well myself! My kid doesn't seem to get that book though. She always gets bored before the end. Which is a problem we have not encountered in many other stories.

Her favorite illustration so far is Quentin Blake's picture of the Trunchbull from Roald Dahl's "Matilda" hammer-throwing little Amanda over the schoolyard fence. I gotta admit it made me laugh out loud when I first saw it.

Ah, Matilda. And I do admit that the Sleep Book does drag a little. My son doesn't have a problem with it because the stories primarily serve as a stalling tactic before going to sleep, so he would probably be fine with me reading 'Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire' to him as long as it kept the sleep at bay for a few more hours.

erosarts In reply to ElectricGecko [2010-04-11 07:17:12 +0000 UTC]

What is it with kids and going to sleep? It's not enough that my daughter has to fight the idea of sleep with every ounce of energy that the day has provided her with, she has to deprive me of it too. I typically sleep very poorly at night (and wind up answering DA comments, like now), and might occasionally need a 15 or 20 minute nap during the day, and she will absolutely freak out.

ElectricGecko In reply to erosarts [2010-04-11 10:14:25 +0000 UTC]

My son generally sleeps just fine, despite the stalling. He goes down at eight, is usually up at seven, and never wakes up in the night. My daughter, however, likes to go to sleep around twelve at night (sometimes later), and then wake up at 3 am to party. She hardly ever sleeps, and never naps, despite being eight months old. My three year-old son still naps for two to three hours in the afternoon every day. Kids are crazy. I've spent lots of time at 4 am driving to an open Tim Hortons, buying a coffee with the shift workers, and then watching episodes of the A-Team on my laptop in-store with the baby so my wife and son can get some sleep. Good times.

Wow. That's tough. We never had to sacrifice like that. My daughter started sleeping in big 6-8 hours of overnight chunks at about two weeks. We were pretty lucky on that, I guess.

Nice job on this. Looks cool... But... Hey, I thought I was a Suess fan, too. I mean, I have the 7 Lady Godivas and the political cartoons and the Secret art... How did I miss this one!? [hangs head in shame]

I had totally forgotten about it until we checked it out. And then all the memories came flooding back. Because I did love this story as a kid. And in particular the drawings of the Crunk-Car and the Ga-Zoom, which was a cannon which Marvin fires himself out of.

There is no doubt that Dr. Seuss is one of the best ever. And even when he got all preachy at you, he never lost sight of the fact that the message needed to entertain first.

I'm not that good at coloring from scratch on Photoshop. Plus, it seems like a waste of time. I like to have an actual surface with markings on it when I'm done. Just one of those die-hard traditionalists, I guess.

Thanks for the compliment!
