Description Cherry blossom and crane kanzashi set.

A lot of firsts for me! My first kanzashi crane, first (successful XD) project with sakura petals, and first hair comb. I made several pieces so I can wear it in a wide variety of hairstyles.

This thing took me almost a week to make, but I'm very pleased with it! I folded over 200 petals for the large hair-stick alone, and I must have spent a good 4 or 5 hours on the crane. (I know, I know, I'm slow at this. )

What do you think?

It really looks like professional work.
How long does it take to make? You could try to make and sell some.

Thank you! I'm certainly no professional! I'm very flattered that you would say something like that.

The entire set took me about five days to finish, but that was working in-between four to six hours a day. I'm a little more experienced now, so I might be able to finish something like this in two or three days working the same hours. I'm still pretty slow by most standards, but I'm getting faster.

I do sell some kanzashi at local craft fairs, but they don't sell very well because no one in my area knows what they are. I would like to have a small online shop eventually, but I'm not quite there yet.

I find it really nicely done for my taste.
I discovered kanzashi craft just recently so I can understand perople not knowing about it. I knew geisha had ornaments but didn't know it was made out of fabric!

If you were to open an online shop, be sure to count me as a new customer. (one of my friends would, too ^^)

Perhaps you could open commissions too.
However I'm not sure how much such work can be... On Etsy prices are very varying.

Thanks! Before I knew what kanzashi were, I just figured any old bunch of flowers glued to a hair clip would do for a geisha hairstyle. As soon as I realized there was a special technique involved, I knew I just had to learn it.

I don't know if I'm brave enough to do commissions. I would be afraid I couldn't live up to people's expectations. I'm also not sure about pricing. The kanzashi take a lot work (and sometimes a lot of materials), but I'd be afraid of overpricing. I'm not very good at judging the worth of something handmade. An item may be special to me, and may have taken a lot of time and effort, but I don't really know how others would see it.

Thank you for your encouragement! Maybe I can do some research and see what all is involved with opening a little web shop. It might take some trial and error, but I bet I could figure it out eventually.

Yes, me too! xD

I understand your feeling. Doing commission is often awkward... And for the price you have to count material and hours of work. On Etsy it goes by 30 to more than 300$ for some pieces.

For now perhaps I'll try to make some myself...I'd love to. I hope it's not too hard as a beginner.
But I'm still following you and your perhaps-future shop.

Kanzashi making may take practice, but the technique is actually really, really easy, and I find it to be pretty relaxing and enjoyable. It's cool that you want to try it!

This thread on the Immortal Geisha website has links to almost all of the good tutorials. I would suggest getting started there, if you haven't already found a tutorial you like. [link]

Have fun!

I like how everyone's take on the crane is different. It's quite fun to see how everyone interprets a familiar form.

The sakura are adorable, of course, and I hope you find lots of fun ways to wear this amazing set.

Thanks!

I've always found that to be pretty interesting too. It's like in art class: You can have a room full of people try to draw from the exact same scene, and every single person will have their own style.
