It's hard, 'cause traditional tools are kinda expensive, and you have to start little by little, but sometimes you don't really need expensive tools or stuff like that! I mean, I'm used to sketch and the only thing that I need is just a rubber and a mechanical pencil...
If you want a "better-professional look" is obvious that will help if you have nice tools, but nowadays what you really need to improve your skills is know how to manage your time and practice!
