The reflections on the water and the remnants of the dock are one of the strongest points of this image. The play of gold, white and gray and blue reminds me of all the times I have ever been out in nature. I can almost smell the cold water, hear its slosh against the shore, feel a cold breeze and maybe even imagine a few notes of a bird's song. This lighting is beautiful but lasts for only a very short time. You did quite well in being at the right place at the right time.
I think if you could improve this image, it would be by cropping out some of the bottom and maybe even the east (viewers right side) a little bit. Or maybe there is some sort of filter you might play with. Either way, the thing that bothers me a bit about the bottom of the image is that there is a lot of blank, textureless area that contrasts sharply with the water and the trees and maybe even the clouds a little bit. It is a bit distracting although there really isn't much you can crop without starting to cut out the water. Maybe if you take a picture like this again you could play around with different angles?
Other than that, this is a really stunning image. It is a beautiful scene, and I appreciate that you must have either been in the right place at the right time or had to get your timing just right to catch this kind of lighting. Keep up the godo work and have fun!

I see this three time on my profile, so I hope it didn't really submit three times...

Amazing capture, you got that magical light right there. The sky seems to gradually be a little too dark at the top of the image, doesn't it? It looks kind of weird that the blues in the sky are darker the further you go up the image.

The sky is exposed up there - in other words, if I printed it you would see it better. This is the drawback to stacking grad filters to darken the bright areas of the photograph. This was an incredibly difficult image to balance because of the lighting and so with every give, there is a take. I would fix it, but you really don't want to mess with the sky if you can help it.

Stacked grad filter, ugh. It makes sense to me because of the light on the relatively small spot. My question would be if it's even necessary to use filter stacking. Shouldn't the DR of your camera be enough to capture the different brightness between the shadows and the spot of light without adding filters?

Short answer...no It took 6 stops worth of grads to balance this exposure. And, btw, this is from my old camera. I'm using circular filters on a Nikon d5000

Holy 6 stops... Didn't expect that at all tbh. I think I kind of know what you are talking about but it's hard to imagine stacking circular filters. It sounds like a lot of...twiddle work (is that a thing in the english language?^^).

If twiddle means "pain in the ass", then yes. It's not a big deal - it's just a 2-stop and 4-stop screwed on the lens together, and then you have to crop out any vignetting. In this case though I just zoomed the lens through and past the vignetting, since this image is at 11mm and not the widest, 10mm.

Yes, it means pain in the ass. xD We have a terminology like Friemelarbeit and Fummelarbeit (coll.). "Arbeit" being "work" and "fummeln/friemeln" is "to twiddle" I guess. That's why I translated it this way, lol. So yes, it's a pain in the ass, especially for guys like me who are literally retarded when it comes to fiddling around with small scale adjustments/tools/etc...
