Description A Seljuk heavy cavalryman and a Qara Khitai noble hunting gophers on the steppe. Gophers, once thought to be endemic to North America, were in fact widespread in Asia, until made extinct by excessive hunting by the numerous peoples of the steppe, mainly for sport. Notice the "spotter" on the left, whose task was to shoot gophers in the event of the animal having any chance of escaping, which would reflect badly on the noblemen's prowess. Can you spot the gopher between the two riders?

Edit: Corrected the spelling in the title, thanks to MongkeQaan  for pointing out the mistake!

Well is one of my favourite steppe peoples for its spectacular history: as Yelu Dashi the founder of Qara Khitai fled from the ruined Liao empire and its destroyers the jurchens and how he could lead an horde of khitai and other steppe nomads to the conquest of Central Asia achieving to defeat the seljuk army of the famous sultan Sanjar.

You're definitely doing Angus McBride proud with these battle scenes!

I agree. Definitely reminiscent of Angus McBride's composition.

I do like this one (costume reference from McBride painting for the Attila and the Nomad Hordes) -  good work - the critique: the saddle on the rider in the foreground, too small bow and bow case, the wild cat pelt on the Kara-Kitai is of what animal? And  the archer in the back is too small for his horse -  otherwise a great scene

If I may, the bow i correct size. It is a short bow, used on horseback for it's mobility and just functionality while on the horse.

Qara Khitai. Qara is Turco-Mongolian for black.

Looks awesome, though I wonder - would a helmet be necessary when fighting even the most fierce and powerful gophers?

Short answer: yes, yes it would.
