Visigothic laws were commanding nobles to equip their servents even if slaves as good as they could and with armour if possible. So if Noblman was rich he was obliged to equip even slave well.

Very nice! One thing though...chainmail armor wasΒ really quite expensive so that infantry guy might not be a slave?

He is a slave. If such a slave was well equiped was rather a metter of his lord and how rich he was-but generaly Visigothic kingdom laws demanded that noblemans should equip their slaves into combat well.

Very well done altough i dont think you had a clear slave class in Visigoth society. It was more proto feudal. You had however some kind of slavery or serfs but I dont think they were in military. Altough considering is medieval age when warfare came everyone trully was invoked to war. Is good to finaly see someone drawn how they actualy were instead of anachronistic or fantastical image.

There were clear slave class in Visigoth society as well as slaves in Visigothic military, especially at the down of Visigothic kingdom.

I have absolutely fallen in love with your beautiful and depictions of medieval warfare. I am looking to commission some concept art for the fantasy novel I am getting ready to publish. The job would be character drawings with a focus on accurate arms and armor, and further down the line might also include artwork for a book trailer or even cover art for the book itself. The manuscript is getting ready for editing, but you can read the prologue at [link] if you want. If you are interested in the project or just want a free eBook please contact me at ljodnster@gmail.com.

I'm impressed by the similarities whith the Byzantine army of the same era...The cavalryman is an accurate representation of the byzantine "ΞΞΊΟΞ―ΟΞ±Ο" a medium-heavy cavarlyman (mostly lower and military aristocracy of the borders). On the other hand the infantryman is a similar representation of the "΀΢άκονΡΟ" light-medium infantry with multiple roles on the field of battle... Anyway exelent work and very accurate.

The visigoths tried to perpetuate the roman empire in the Iberian Peninsula. They maintaned the provincial administration and the used a lot of material, equipment and weapons like the ones of the late roman armies. The byzantine army of that time was equipped similarly.

Awesome. But I'd doubt that a simple commoner, leave alone a slave, would posess mail and a sword.

Your stuff you do for that mag is great! Do you have to do a lot of research about costumes and equipment or do you get all the direction from the magazine people?

I do some of my own research but most of it is done by the historians that write for the magazine.
