After several waves of attack fighters opened a hole in the Cardassian front lines, it was observed that several Galor-class destroyers were positioned in such a way that any vessel that would go through the hole would be trapped.
Viewing this potential trap as perhaps being the only opportunity to break open the Dominion fleet, Sisko ordered Galaxy Wing 9-1 and Galaxy Wing 9-3 to engage the Galor-class destroyers, and effectively "hold the hole open" while all remaining ships headed through.

Yes, i too wish we had seen more of the Galaxy in action. In TNG the creator were limited to the model, so all we get is DS9 were there use a CGI version.

Β Too be fair, a squadron of X-Wings and B-Wings=death for a Star Destroyer. It is really do different for a Galaxy Glass facing off against far more maneuverable Jem-Hadar fighters.

The thing about being forced into a fight you can't afford to engage in space has always bothered me. You see, space is big. There are no barriers big enough to force one into a bottleneck. If you're confronted with a dangerous enemy fleet in space, your greatest defense mechanism is the navigator. Go around! Don't engage until you have the big pimped-up friendly space station at your back!

How I always thought that work was that the enemy was in the perfect position to intercede you no matter where you try to go around. And the head on attacked at least allows you to bring you're strongest guns to bear.
