A showcase of the Game of Thrones Dragon Egg Prop for Drogon, the red/black Dragon of Daenerys Targayen.

Drogon is one of the three dragons born in the wastelands beyond Lhazar, along with Rhaegal and Viserion. He is named after Daenerys's late husband Khal Drogo. He can be distinguished by his black and red colored scales, and red-black wings. He is also Daenerys's personal mount.
Drogon is noticeably larger than Rhaegal and Viserion. Initially the luck of the draw in terms of biology, Drogon became even larger than them, as they spend over a year chained beneath Meereen while Drogon remained free to hunt and fly at his leisure. Most of his scales are black, shadowing red ones that run down his back and neck.

I tryed to made a realistic lifesize version from the 3 Dragon Eggs seen on the show, so i use a base of styrofoam eggs with 20 cm height. Its plus/minus 1 cm the size of the original props they used in the show.

I made the scales from craftfoam (here in germany its better known as Moosgummi) because its easier to cut with scissors. that was the most time consuming step during the whole production. Cutting out that much foam scales for the three eggs was an weeks works i made during watching TV. I glued the scales on the eggs with special styrofoam glue, because basic glue acts like acid against the styrofoam. I leave the bottom of the egg without scales and fill it with putty to fake the fossilization effect. I also use a little sponge and dab the scales a bit with putty for a chalkstone look.

Final Step was the coloring. I painted the eggs all black as base color. Afterwards added the colors Green (Rhaegal), Black (Drogon) and Gold/White (Viserion) with drybrush technique.

For the Birthday gift i made this for i also made a box were i woodburned the Targaryen symbol into the top of the box.

Its very time consuming, but the end-product is worth it, if you want a real size Dragon Egg for yourself. Depending were you buy craftfoam and styrofoam eggs a single egg has a cost factor of around 6 to 7 Euro. Compared to some resin replicas you can buy on ebay for up to 150 Euro (for a single egg) it is a real bargain.
