Munificent-class star frigates were powerful, multi-role starships that served within the naval forces of the Confederacy of Independent Systems. In its original role, the frigate was intended to protect shipments of valuables in the Outer Rim or to threaten systems indebted to the Banking Clan. They were also able to transport precious cargo in their freight vaults or to escort transports of valuables.
When the Banking Clan joined the Separatists, the frigates were used for the CIS Navy. During the Clone Wars, thousands of Munificent frigates formed the backbone of the Separatist fleet and made up the bulk of the CIS naval force.

Often referred to as "pocket cruisers", the frigate measured to 825 meters in length, and were fast, lightly armored warships that were designed to operate in squadrons supported by smaller craft to take down larger capital ships.

Among the most feared warships in the Separatist fleet, the Munificent-class was equipped with a large array of weapons that made the vessel more than a match for anything the Galactic Republic Navy possessed in similar size and firepower.

Munificent-class frigates were almost entirely automated, with a nominal skeleton crew of only 200, who saw to the vessel's maintenance and daily operations. And the ships' remaining interior space was used for machinery, redundant systems and hangar facilities that could hold up to 48 vulture droid starfighter.

They were also used to ferry a passenger capacity of 150,000 battle droids of various types that were kept in stasis. With this number, the Munificent class is able to pose a serious threat to enemy ground forces, even alone or with only a few sister ships. Planets defended by only a small garrison could thus be conquered by a single Munificent Frigate.

Even if the Munificent class had a strong frontal armament, due to its origin as a value transporter it was vulnerable to weapon fire. Much of their interior consists of hollow cargo holds, making them easily vulnerable as soon as the shields failed.
