Both, the Defiant and the Prometheus classes are children of an era of War and Terror in the 70s of the 24th Century. With the Borg attack at Wolf 359, the Klingon conflict in 2372 and the following Dominion War, Starfleet change its mind with their agenda to not build dedicated warships. Shortly after the Wolf 359 massacre the ASDB Engineers (Advanced Starship Design Buero) got the assignment to concepting new ship classes and technologies which should be designed more for tactical situations.

Probably the most interesting technologies that have been developed are obviously the ablative armor, the quantum torpedos, the impulse phasers and the high energy and double bubbled shield systems. Many of the new Akira, Norway, Steamrunner or Sabré classes were equipped with additional offensive and defensive systems that almost doubled the original planned weapons and defense systems. But completely new spaceship classes have also been developed, such as the most famous anti-Borg weapon, the U.S.S. Defiant. After that, Starfleet continued to developed highly autonomous ships such as the Prometheus class. The grade of automatisations on these high tech ships helped to reduced the crew without losing effectiveness.
