In January of 2381 the Collective launched surprise attacks on the worlds of Barolia and Acamar III, completely eradicating their populations. The Borg then sent an ominous message to the Federation: "We are the Borg. You will be annihilated. Your biological and technological distinctiveness have become irrelevant. The Borg Invasion of 2381 was the historic attempt by the Borg Collective to completely exterminate (not assimilate) the United Federation of Planets, the Klingon Empire, and other allied worlds in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants and to subjugate the remaining worlds in local space.

The Destiny trilogy was an epic event, which saw the crews of the Enterprise-E (Picard), Titan (Riker), Voyager (Chakotay), and Avertine (Ezri Dax) come together to save the Alpha Quadrant. Β It also saw the return of Captain Erika Hernandez, sole survivor of the Columbia NX-02, and finally revealed the startling origin of the Borg, which was a result of the actions of some of Columbia's crew.
As the storyline continued, many world's (including Risa) were defeated, and many ships destroyed, with billions of lives lost (Tuvok's son amongst them). Β The Enterprise-E briefly travelled to the Delta Quadrant, where it was boarded by the Hirogen, and Voyager was all but wrecked fighting a Borg fleet that simply smashed through the ships sent against it. Β The Transphasic torpedoes brought by Voyager at first prove useful, but the Borg adapt, and the weapons are nullifed.
I won't spoil the ending if you haven't already read it, but it is well worth it. Β
