Description

Recently, I was hired to illustrate study materials for Climate University, a multidisciplionary project by multiple Finnish universities and organizations offering free university-level courses on climate change, sustainable future and related topics. My topis was the recently added Biodiversity Now course, centering on the biodiversity crisis and ways to mitigate or solve it. It's always great to get to work on something that feels like it's trying to make the world a better place.

This is one of the about 20 illustrations I made for the course. It's a chart comparing the numbers of recent extinctions (black bars) and currently threatened species (pink bars) with the great mass extinctions of the geological past. The message is that currently, we have only lost a small portion of the planet's amazing biodiversity and there's still well room to reverse the trend. But if we start losing threatened species on an accelerating rate, we'll quickly approach mass extinction levels.

In an artistic sense, this was an interesting project. The style was much more stylized than I usually do, and they had a ready-made visual guide to follow, with colour palettes and fonts. I found it quite nice to work within those boundaries.
