Description
On the afternoon of October 30, 1995, the day before Halloween, we're on SP's Sunset Route outside of Lordsburg NM to chase trains. Soon, we caught 2 trains, a Fort Worth Bound Hotshot Z Train led by 3 C44-9W's & Amtrak Train #1, The Sunset Limited, from Orlando FL to Los Angeles CA. The train was running over 2 hours & 40 minutes late & is making up for lost time behind a P32-8BWH "Pepsi Can" & an F40PH leading 5 MHC Boxcars, a Baggage Car, 2 Hi-Level Coaches, & 8 Superliners as it heads towards Hollywood. Earlier that month, the Sunset Limited was derailed by saboteurs near Palo Verde AZ which killed Amtrak Sleeping car attendant Mitchell Bates & 78 passengers were injured. This was the second derailment the train suffered since the Big Bayou Canot Disaster 2 years before. Despite a $310,000 reward to capture the saboteurs, to this day, the people responsible have still never been caught, leaving the case unsolved. The train would reach LA the following morning, without incident.
