Description
On the afternoon of August 3, 1995, we're on UP's Cima Subdivision outside of Las Vegas NV to chase trains. Soon, we caught 2 trains, an Omaha Bound Manifest Freight led by a C40-8 & an SD40-2 & Amtrak Train #35, The Westbound Desert Wind, from Chicago IL to Los Angeles CA via Denver CO, Salt Lake City UT, Las Vegas NV, & Barstow & San Bernardino CA. The train was running over 1 hour & 40 minutes late & is making up for lost time behind a P40DC leading the 4 Superliners towards LA. The train had broke off it's parent train, The California Zephyr (Trains 5 & 6), in Salt Lake City the day before & would recouple with the Zephyr, a couple of days later. The train would reach LA, that night. 2 years later, the Desert Wind along with it's sister train to the Pacific Northwest, The Pioneer (Trains 25 & 26) would fall victim to the 1997 Budget cuts, leaving the city of Las Vegas, without a train service.
