Description On the rainy afternoon of October 4, 1953, LE&E R1 4-8-4 Northern #3703 "Athena" leads a Mixed Freight from Cincinnati OH to Boston MA over Breakneck Summit. The Train is crossing the Connecticut River 55 Miles West of Salem MA on a Warren Steel Truss Bridge as it heads towards Boston. The locomotive was built in 1931 & use on the Railroad's Premier Passenger Trains such as the Midnight Limited, Motor City Limited, Arrow, Speedbird, Ohioan, & the Nightly Mail Trains. When the Premier trains were streamlined in the late 1930's, the R1's were later put on secondary Passenger assignments & fast freight duties. At the time the photo was shot, the locomotive was on it's final legs as a freight locomotive for the Railroad. 5 Years later, the locomotive along with it's 4 sisters were withdrawn from service & sadly, all were scrapped.
