Description
On the morning of August 29, 1975, we're on the Milwaukee Road's Pacific Extension Mainline outside of Deer Lodge MT to chase trains. Soon, we catch an Eastbound Manifest Freight making it's way under the now disused catenary heading for St. Paul MN. The train is loaded with Timber, Auto Parts, Automobiles, Lumber, LPG, Steel Coils, & so on bound for the Great Lakes. The power of this train is a GP38-2, 2 SD40-2's, & 1 SD45 on the head end, & another SD45 as the Mid Train DPU Unit. Even though, they discontinued electric operations, the catenary wires on this stretch is still untouched. 2 Years later, the railroad would file for reorganization & 5 years after this shot was taken, Milwaukee Road would abandoned their Pacific Extension as far west as Miles City MT, ending train traffic through the Bitterroot Mountains. Today, all that remains of this Rail Right of way is a stretch of gravel, where the rails once stood.
