On the morning of August 25, 1973, we're back on the Lake Erie & Eastern outside of Columbus OH, to chase D&H 4-8-4 #302 (Reading T-1 4-8-4 #2102) on the Midnight Limited Excursion sponsored by the Lake Erie Model RR Club. Soon, we caught the 302 & her consist at track speed heading for Congers NY. The Reading T-Hog had been leased to Ross Rowland's High Iron Company for trips on the Erie Lackawanna & the D&H throughout the Northeast. Earlier before passing our camera's, the 302 passed a Detroit Bound Autoparts Train with 4 GP35's on the head end. The LE&E, by this point, only had several manifests & a few Local freights on their schedules as most of their traffic was TOFC, COFC, Autorack, Autoparts, & Refrigerator Trains from the East Coast. The Railroad was cutting wasteful practices, Unnecessary Branch Lines, & improved infrastructure. Despite the hardship of the early 1970's, the LE&E was improving everyday until a few years later, when it was absorbed into Conrail, ending the Innovating Railroad's History. back to the 302, the locomotive would arrive in Congers NY in the afternoon before returning to Columbus later that day.
