On the rainy morning of November 17, 1979, we're on Southern Railway's Mainline at Hawin Lake NC to chase Canadian Pacific Royal Hudson #2839 on the Carolina Piedmont Steam Special from Charleston SC to Charlette NC. Soon, we caught the 2839 & her 15 car train racing along at track speed heading for Charlette. The locomotive was doing well for the Southern's Steam Program despite it's poor pulling power, & is making great memories for the Steam Program. The locomotive hauled both the Heart of Dixie Steam Special & the Roanoke Chapter NRHS Independence Limited down the Clinchfield through Kentucky & Tennessee which were great trips for the Hudson. The Hudson would arrive in Charlette that afternoon, where it'll be turned & serviced while the Passengers would detrain for lunch. After the following year's season, the Royal Hudson would be retired from excursion service & be donated to the Nethercutt Collection in Sylmar CA, where it remains on display.evangaines 2024
