The white catlike creature told her that it could grant any wish of hers, make any miracle a reality. Her cousin (actually, her fraternal twin sister) had died, leaving her without her other half. Mei would pay any price to be reunited with her Misaki, and she said to the creature that called itself Kyubey:
I wish for my sister, Fujioka Misaki, to be brought back to life without the illness she died of!
Immediately, a pain shot through her heart, and a green ball of light emerged from her chest. Taking it in her hands, Mei saw that it was a doll's eye, exactly like the one behind her... eyepatch? She did not feel its cool glass in her socket.
From that day on, Misaki Mei fought to protect the people of Yomiyama from the plague of witches, transforming into a life-sized doll version of herself to do battle, her Soul Gem kept secure behind her eyepatch...
