Description
This illustration started as a simple 'I'm-bored-sketch', but I'm proud of how it turned out because I actually cell-shaded! Didn't think it was possible since my last couple of attempts ended horribly! xD Still, it had to be coloured.
The character is my protagonist James for my comic project Avadon. I just love drawing him as a little kid. (James: )
Line-art was done traditionally, coloured in Photoshop CS5.

I like the contrast of colors and how u could make the colors blue andΒ red work together in such harmony. u really showed good shades and made the blue work with u instead of u working with the blue. u have really good intention, keep drawing!!

However, what exactly is the cell-shading?? I hear it a lot but it's never clear to me... mainly 'cause your drawing looks a bit different that I usually see on the cell-shaded pictures.

It's just a technique of coloring pictures to make them appear hand-drawn, a bit simple too. instead of soft shadow-lines (which makes a drawing appear realistic) you use hard ones.

Ah, so much darker, bleaker now that the shadows are apparent, and the crystals are opaque, not as "lighthearted" as the translucent gem-like kind. James' robes is strikin inthat hte pattern, though not quite, is very remniscent of a chain pattern. It implies a bond to the poor soul. Now I can also see why he looks so down: wiht all the blood spatter, though not as much on him, I'm guessing he had to fight some guardian or monster and isnt' happy that he had to sispatch it. If that's it then it looks like it was a pretty violent end for the creature or person.
The sense of scale for the background is tough to figure out. In the ink I thought it was natural stone/granite tha was high and cracked, but the blood implies it's much closer; yet the "tree branches" mixed with lightning or glows, I just can't make out. It also looks like there's a tiny shield or crest at the top of the highest blood splat on the right. At least with the stone to James' right (our left) I can see that it's some kind of regular stone.
Regardless, looks like it's been a rough and unhappy day for the poor kid. Still, he'll perservere I'm sure.
