 STORYTIME!
1,627 WC

8:00AM, Wednesday, July 24th.

Isabella was preoccupied with clipping Fable's mane during a particularly hot morning. The heat wave was nearly unbearable, as activity around the stable seemed to be at an all-time low. Nobody, human or horse, wanted to be anywhere near that glaring sunlight outside of the barn. Every occupied stall had a non-stop fan going. Wren had even started carrying around a handheld mini-fan, which was a little odd-looking, but it's practicality had been proven. Isabella was just starting to think that Wren was on to something with that little device, when the silver-haired woman stepped out of the office nearby. Her gaze turned to Isabella quickly, and her eyes were somber.

"Hey, Isabella, could you come in here for a moment? I'd like to show you something," she spoke casually, not alluding to what was on her mind.

"Sure, gimme a second to put Fable away," Isabella responded as she finished up with her favorite stallion, unclipping him from the crossties and leading him to his stall. When she arrived in the office, she found Wren sitting at her horribly outdated desktop. There were days when not even Laurent, the avid gamer, could not get the thing to connect to the internet. The kid wanted desperately to replace it, but Wren was having none of it.

Isabella leaned over the desk to get a closer look, and noticed Wren had her Facebook up, on a Stud farm's page. Kinavara Stud. She had heard some things about this place.

"The Kinavara Stud regretfully announces  that following the recent death of the owner Alfred Burns, all the horses, equipment, and land will be sold off by Mr. Burns children who are unable to continue its running..."

"Alfred Burns passed away? Didn't you know him?" Isabella asked as she continued reading.

"Yes, we met a couple of times at various events, but I didn't know him very well. He seemed like a good man, I can't imagine how his children must feel..." She said as she scrolled down slowly. Attached at the bottom of the post was an album of photos. "The rest of his herd is being auctioned off this weekend. I know you're in the market for a new horse, and this may be a golden opportunity."

"You may be right," Isabella added, quickly noticing the large, red stallion. "The place is in Australia, though. Would we even make it in time?"

"Oh, sure. Planes are much faster than horses, y'know," Wren quipped smartly, knowing that Isabella had only ever been on a plane once, as a child.

"Aha, hilarious. But yeah, I'd love to go meet some of these guys. Looks like a few of them have some serious potential." She stood and turned to leave.

"I'll set us up with some plane tickets and a rental car, then. We ought to arrive early on Saturday," Wren continued, partially discussing the plans to herself as Isabella returned to her chores.

4:00AM, Saturday, July 28th

It was so early. Isabella was used to getting up early, but this was a stretch. She was sure to put a few energy drinks in the fridge the night before, and had already finished one. If she was honest, she didn't really remember the drive to the airport, or passing the security gate. She had to chug the last of her drink there, before finally getting through and waiting for their plane to clear out of its previous passengers.

She looked out at the gigantic flying machine, and couldn't help but feel apprehensive about the coming trip. She didn't really recall the flight from her childhood, as it was a short in-country flight with her mother.

"Don't fret, Isabella. I'm pretty sure they have movies for rent inside, or you could nap. It'll be a while yet before we'll arrive," Wren piped up, who must've seen the twiddling thumbs of her niece.

The intercom blasted with a woman's voice, calling for passengers for the flight to Sydney. It wasn't long before Isabella and Wren were strapped in for the foreseeable future, almost a full 24 hour flight. With luck and settled nerves after a smooth takeoff, Isabella had drifted to sleep, and generally didn't move for the trip, save for bathroom breaks.

*time skip*

Isabella had to crack her back once out of the plane and in the airport, and several satisfying pops relieved her. Wren sauntered by, searching for the rental car desk. She had to stop and ask for directions twice before they found it. It wasn't long before the women tossed their small bags in the back seat of their silver rental sedan, and set off towards Kinavara Stud. The majority of their ride was in silence, each of them drained from the plane. The scenery flying past them on the highway was very calming, and while still green, it looked vastly different from the Americas. I solid two hours had passed of driving on major highways, to a smaller road, and finally, to a private drive that led to the gates of Kinavara Stud. The estate looked glamorous, and the parking lot was already packed with vehicles.

Isabella and Wren parked on the outer rim. The very first thing that they noticed when they open the doors was the heat. It was so much worse than Apex Equestrian back at home! The cold air from the car AC was already sorely missed by the women. Isabella had already worked up a sweat just changing into her riding boots, expecting to test ride a couple of the horses offered. Slowly, due to the unfathomable heat, they made their way up to the main facility where the horses were. There was a cute palomino mare hopping cleanly over small fences, a fancy splashed gelding being dismounted by another rider, and the blood bay stallion that had originally caught their eye. He was absolutely magnificent, at liberty in a small arena. Isabella and Wren watched him for several minutes, discussing their projections between themselves, as other people came to interact with him and watch him as well. He seemed to be very popular. His long stride headed to the far end of the arena, following a pregnant grulla mare. Behind them, Isabella glimpsed a white mare and a small, dark foal next to her.

"Wren, do you see that?" She muttered quietly, pointing at the far arena they hadn't visited yet. Wren followed Isabella's outstretched arm towards the mare and her foal.

"Well, let's go check them out," she said as she turned and began making her way in that direction.

As they got closer, Isabella's heart began hammering with some emotion. The mare was stunning, a beautiful grey with warm brown eyes who was very relaxed among all the commotion. Following her loosely was a gorgeous, leggy young colt with all the brightness of the Australian sun in his eyes. The few people hovering near the round pen dispersed, and a young woman joined them. She first introduced herself to Wren.

"Hello, take a liking to this one, have you?" She said.

"I believe so. My name is Mrs. Wren Harrington. I'm terribly sorry to hear about Mr. Burns," Wren spoke.

"Zoe Hughes, and thank you. Would you like to meet this handsome lad?" This time, Isabella spoke.

"Oh, yes please!" Her eagerness was not subtle in any way. Zoe waved for the women to follow her to the round pen's entrance.

"The lovely mare is Kimberly, and the sire is the handsome Riordan over there," gesturing to the magnificent stallion they were watching earlier. "And this, is Kalumburu." What a phenomenal pairing, Isabella thought to herself. Zoe went on to tell the foal's history thus far as Isabella greeted his mother, who was lively and playful. Before long, she felt acquainted enough with Isabella and turned to nibble the grass on the other side of the round pen fence. Isabella's attention was now able to focus entirely on the phenomenal colt now approaching her. She kneeled down to his level and covered her mouth in awe. Kalumburu was absolutely breathtaking. Isabella struggled to come up with the words to describe him. He was shining with confidence and curiosity, his furry ears alert to everything around him, even when he was focused on Isabella. Wren and Zoe were watching nearby, equally in awe of the young colt.

Isabella had decided that this gorgeous young foal was immediately her favorite, and she would try her hardest to bring him home. She stroked him all over, almost doing a double-take when she thought she felt the physical embodiment of potential rippling beneath her fingers in the form of this amazing colt. She turned to Zoe and Wren with a huge grin, already completely enthralled. Wren knew what that smile meant.

"Who should we speak to regarding purchase?" Wren asked Zoe.

"If you head over to those stands, you'll find my associate, Neaghe Boal. She'll help you get set up for the auction in a little bit." She also had a knowing smile when she glanced back at Isabella, who had already found Kalumburu's ticklish spot.

"Come, Isabella. The auction is beginning soon," Wren spoke up over the crowd's murmur. Isabella Uttered assurances as she said goodbye to the foal she may very well never see again after today--which was hopefully not the case. Together, the three women left the round pen and went their separate ways. Zoe left to assist other potential buyers in testing horses, heading for the springly palomino from earlier, while Isabella and Wren made a beeline for the woman named Neaghe Boal.

Isabella wiggled her hands into her pockets, secretly crossing her fingers so tight they hurt, eager for the auction to begin.
