Story: 750wc
Theo craned his neck in all directions, this being his first and busiest real show. Wren and Isabella had tried exposing him to new places with crowds, trailers, and other horses before, but the local shows did not compare to the Carbarita. Even this early in the morning, people were already parked in chairs or standing around the show areas, with more packing in.

Isabella was finishing up with Theo’s bitless bridle, it was time for the young horses to march up towards the beach for the halter show. Wren was hurriedly swishing a soft brush over as much of him as possible, as if every moment Theo went unbrushed, a new layer of dust and grime had already settled upon his coat. Isabella tried to calm Wren down as she continued brushing the young colt as he walked out of the trailer door, more quickly than before. Wren fiddled with the brush in her hands as she watched her niece and Theo join the growing herd of Futurity foals headed towards the beach, before quickly putting it away and following the crowd of people on their way to watch.

Isabella peered at the various foals and handlers ahead of her, spotting a crowd favorite, KhC Marnnga. She was quite stunning in person with her unique anomalous coat. Even so, she loved Theo and he was growing to become Isabella’s dreamy boy. They weren’t the first to be shown, so they remained in the shade near the treeline. Theo couldn’t be bothered to graze, but was enraptured by the ocean that was now in full view. His nostrils flared with the scent of the salty water, and those fuzzy ears were tuned into the rumbling and fizzing of the waves as they tumbled on the shore. He intently watched the other young colts and fillies brave the ocean, some taking to it like it was nothing, and less brave ones flipping out, unable to reach the water’s edge. Isabella was thankful and amazed with how calm Anthem was behaving, although he felt tense and coiled like a spring, brimming with curiosity and energy.

It was not much longer until the coordinator came to let them know they were up next. Almost immediately, Isabella’s nerves went awol, and Theo picked up on it. He started dancing about in place and tossing his head, anticipating his turn to go to the water. Isabella used this distraction to forget her nerves and focus on him.

As they both turned into the show space, Anthem was uppity and ready to go, so they began with  a proud, bouncy trot, mostly because she knew Theo wouldn’t be able to restrain himself much longer without stretching his legs just a little bit. He was loosened up sufficiently enough to transition back to a walk. As they reached one of the far sides of the makeshift arena, the waves came out much further than the apparent usual, crossing right into Theo’s path. The fizzling of the water immediately took his focus away, and he followed it back into the main body. Isabella was dragged along with him. He took a careful couple of steps forward until his ankles we submerged, and dropped his muzzle to take a big gulp, before Isabella could try to stop him.

The colt’s reaction to the heavily salty and sandy water could only be described as offended—he yanked his head and himself out of the water, ears pinned and tearing up the sand with his hooves. The lake at home certainly didn’t taste like that! The water smoothed out the carnage caused by his fit, as Anthem just stood there at the very edge of the waterline, glaring down at the saltwater lapping at his feet. Isabella did try to coax him back in, but he was having no part of it. A quick glance at the coordinator, who gave her a thumbs up, meant the judges saw what they needed to, and it was the next horse’s turn to have a go at the ocean. By this point, the sky was already mostly blue. Just out of the arena, Wren could be seen with her camera and a big smile, and she joined Isabella and Theo on the path back to the trailers. She piped up about Theo’s ‘performance’, and turned to show the camera’s screen to Isabella, showcasing the funny photos she got of him, laughing together. Anthem was just glad to be rid of that awful, evil saltwater.
