Something different

Nikon rumours have shared some of the interesting lenses that they have seen at the Photokina show including this rather strange Laowa 24mm f/14 Relay 2x macro lens by Venus Optics.

Key mission lineup

Nikon have firmly set their eyes on the action camera market and have come out with three strong contenders to head out with you on your adventures.
We have talked about some of these already but seeing as there is now a lineup we thought we might just let you know what is coming to you.
Key Mission 360

Get completely immersed in the action by being able to see everything round you. With a super wide angle lens on either end, the camera will represent a 360 degree field of view whatever it is you are doing. This could be great fun to explore and share the things going on around you during your adventures.
Key Mission 170

This is the closest competitor for the GoPro cameras. The 170 is a compact wearable camera.
Key stand out features of this camera are: It's rear screen for easier set up and framing, the camera is waterproof to 10 meters even without it's waterproof hosing and lots of shooting modes in a simple to use camera to really show off that 4k resolution.
Key Mission 80

Looking something like a Flip camera, the Key Mission 80 is a well presented single hand action camera that can also be mounted. With a touch interface and a rear camera it is meant to be a more ergonomic and compact alternative to shooting with you phone. It even looks pretty neat in mat black or brushed metal.

Cropping

Cropping is the process where by you frame your shot then crop it down to the minimum area to show the viewer what you want them to see.
This process can be done at the beginning or after a shoot (we all know where it's best to do it though) and is a fundamental skill to get right to produce appealing images.
As you are framing ask yourself questions:
What's in the edges of my frame? Do you need all that background?
Can you get closer to your subject or zoom in?
Would portrait be more appropriate here?

If you have a solitary subject and that is all you want to show people; then fill the frame with it. Don't be tempted to get too much background into your image or you will lose your subject in a sea of disinterest.
Clearly there are exceptions to this rule as with any but 99% of the time, getting closer, will bring the stronger image.

Landscape or Portrait?

Whilst we are on the subject of cropping it is worth mention the framing technique of portrait.
There will be occasions where it would be more appropriate to frame in portrait that landscape where the subject will better fill the frame that way. Some are more obvious that others but it is not reserved for head and shoulders pictures of people.

When not to crop

There will be occasions when you need the background to help tell the story. Subject and background interaction are important but at the same time a balance needs to take place. You don't want your subject getting lost in the background but at the same time you don't want so little background that the viewer doesn't know what is going on.
Another place where reserved cropping is required is during movement. If your subject is going somewhere, give it somewhere to go. If there is no space in front of your subject, it can spoil the effect of movement, killing an image.

Can I save it for Photoshop?
Yes.
But you know the cost right? The more you remove in post processing (or digital zoom) the less pixels you have to play with so try to not handicap yourself at the computer by being lazy at the camera.
There will be times when you will frame wider than you might like such as action photographs where it is very hard to frame a subject. However wherever possible crop at the camera not the computer.
Cropping tools themselves are very helpful for framing in post processing. A thirds grid can be a big help as is the shaded area outside your cropped area. Some, such as the one on Photoshop CS6 can be changed to different aspect rations, flipped to portrait and even customized. This can be a real life saver if you spot a mistake like a wonky horizon for example.
