Holy shit that's an awesome design... I love everything about it, the many segmented aspects on the abdomen and torso, the beautiful blue steam flowing from the shoulder thrusters, the frayed "wings", the reverse feet on the legs and especially all the segmented components of the "head" area... It's all very well shaded and the design itself is GREAT, quite unique with a futuristic design blended with an sort of Egyptian relic look, all while still feeling organic too.

My designs are often the result of throwing various concepts into the mental melting pot and trying to reduce it to a harmonious mix. It is therefore always interesting for me to see what other people take/interpret from what I produce. Thanks for your comment and favourite.

The concept of a mechanical glowing robo-bug is.. delicious. I love the fact you even included dangling tasslebits. Your scribbly style is full of wonderful textures. C8

this looks very panzerdragoon-like and still very unique. erm like PD-design lol.
if you dont mind, let me say it would have cool movement and a more logical body structure when you simply erase the thick legs on the ground .
btw I have drawn a creature with glowing spots too. glowing parts just rule right *wwooott*

I'm not familiar with Panzerdragoon but thank you anyway. I didn'y really consider the movement of the mantid at the time when I was designing it, so I suppose that shows. As you said, the body structure would be more logical if limbs were moved around a bit. Thanks.
Glowing spots for the win!

After looking at some of Endling's work, I realised I did not utilize my eraser enough! Glowing energy spots are delicious candy it is true. Thanks for your comment and fav.

Ha ha, thank you for confidence in me Mike. To be honest I am not quite sure what the function of the red flowing 'cape' is, other than it is situated under the 'wingcase' of the mantid.

Muchos cool concept, however I'm finding the thin spikes coming off the very very front legs a touch distracting from the form of the thing. Sorry to be a pain... I suppose everyone is entitled to an opinion... as long as its mine. ps I really like the shredded look on the cape/wings... v nice.

When I started this picture I just threw down a silhouette and started to colour it. The spine shapes were orginally rogue paint lines that I incorporated into the design. It is my understanding that they fold back along the arm length as they can be unwieldy. I shall keep your suggestion in mind if I revisit the concept. Thanks
Question - Have you been going to the Wed Night Illustrators meetings? How are you finding them?

Been snowed under last couple o' months so haven't been able to get along. Trying to revisit my portfolio at the moment so haven't even been going to life drawing much-sigh. Also my evenings til now have been largely consumed by a very cute drooling monster (ie my baby daughter), but Ive put a few new things up on DA so tell me what you think. PS have you heard about Smash?

I keep meaning to give you some reasonable feedback/crit but I (insert excessive excuses here). Sorry about that. I will remedy it when I can. Where are you doing life drawing?
Smash? (googles) Sydney Anime convention?
Not even sure whether I am even being dragged down to Avcon.

Very attractive, for a mechanoid anyway. Nicely blended colour palette. I see some liquefy there! Good use of it. Anytime I see white plate armour I think storm trooper, but it's different enough to get away from it. I'll give you some pics of similar beasty-pod vehicles I found that you'd like.
Great work Josh.

Although I am not much of a liquefy fan, it achieved a result similar to what I wanted. I did originally start this concept as a speed paint, but as I spent more time developing the form and concept, the time strecthed out. Thanks mate

Loving this piece. You have the organic-mech style down. And the coloruing technic is spot-on. Definite fave!

I favour organic forms when designing mechanical things, whether they be weapons, creatures, airships or architecture. Thanks for the comment and fav.
