Description Kind of a WIP, since he has to be colored to be accepted into . Basically the gist of the group is that the admin sends you a list of five randomly-selected animals and you choose two to combine. Then you draw them out in a character sheet and use them for RPs and group events. It's a lot of fun and it really gets the creativity ball rolling!
Lots of thanks to for bringing the group for my attention and providing me with the list of animals to choose from

What I chose was a hybrid of axolotl ( rivista-cdn.reptilesmagazine.c… )  and Megaloceros ( orig13.deviantart.net/d003/f/2… ). I'm not sure what his name's going to be yet.

Thank you so much! I've got a colored version of it coming soon so it'll be even MORE majestic

Ambystoma(Axolotl scientific name) megaloceros or Ambystoma Cerbus (Elk's scientific name). Or Magnus corbus caudata (Big horned salamander)? Thats all i came up with anyway XD

Actually these are pretty great suggestions. I'm torn between Ambystoma megaloceros or Magnus corbus caudata, but that narrows the choices down a LOT. Thanks for the input (and sorry for the super late reply )

The more I think about it the more I'm leaning towards Magnus corbus caudata. Not as much of a mouthful and it can be shortened to the nickname Magnus.

What a fun challenge concept - and a lovely (that may be the wrong word for this fella...) result!
I've taken the liberty of inviting the pic to .  I hope you'll accept.

Why thank you! It was a lot of fun to put together.
Thanks for the invite!

Ahhh, that sounds like a really cool idea for a challenge, and certainly likely to create some wacky creatures!
Really like how this came out, the shading looks great already and I'm sure you'll do well at colouring him.

Haha, love the little axolotl face he has, and how you've sort of combined the antlers with the gills - a very nice idea indeed! ^^

It's definitely a group worth looking into. The menagerie of creatures they have to choose from for your hybrids is huge and very diverse.
Thank you (and for the fave)!  I hope so. I always get nervous coloring, for some reason.

I'm glad you like the idea! I was so stoked when the antler/gill combo turned out as good on paper as it was in my head

Vannjaren In reply to EvilSaintGood [2016-05-24 11:46:46 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it really does look cool! ^^
I agree, the diversity of the species is great, I think it makes for much more interesting combinations!

Aww, you're very welcome indeed - and haha, no need to be worried about the colouring; if your colouring is half as good as your pencil work, it'll be ace! (I do understand though, I often get paranoid about ruining a sketch if I colour it... :'D )

Yeah, I do love the idea, and it's great that it came out on paper as good as in your head - alas, if only that could happen more often in drawings...

Awe thanks!
I think people underestimate the creative inspiration you can get from referencing some of Earth's "ickier" inhabitants.

I know right? I'm even like that with coloring digitally (even though it takes a couple clicks to undo everything instead of having to erase or whiteout mistakes lol)
It'll just take practice to break myself of it, that's all.

That's what it comes down to: Practice, practice, practice.

You're very welcome indeed - and as far as I'm concerned, there's no such thing as "icky animals", hehe... they're all fascinating, and if people can't find anything impressive or beautiful in them, they just aren't looking well enough. ^^ Glad you have appreciation for unusual animals too. ^^

Ah, indeed... Though digital has it's own drawbacks of course. You don't lose a file of traditional art, and traditional drawing doesn't crash and lose all of your progress or corrupt files. (this has happened to me quite a few times - not sure whether to blame GIMP or blame my computer. )
I agree though, practise will likely help with this... or at least I hope so... :'D

Likewise! ^^ Some of my favorites are marine invertebrates like nudibranchs; so colorful!

Yeesh, thankfully I have yet to have that happen, though Photoshop tends to crash on me when I try to open it sometimes. I've been wanting to get CS 6 but my laptop's so old, I don't want to risk wasting a license on a computer I'm going to replace in a year or two.
I wonder what computer would be best to keep programs like the Photoshop Suite and big video editing programs like Sony Vegas. I've found Desktops have a longer lifespan than laptops, so that might be preferable.
I hope so too

Indeed - and aaaaah, nudibranchs are indeed so, SO gorgeous in their colouring and even their unusual shapes that some of them have - very cool little critters! And fascinating too...

Ah, I use GIMP for all my digital art, so perhaps it is more prone to crashing. Or maybe it is something to do with my laptop - or perhaps a bad combination of both.
I understand that though, but I hope you can get CS 6 some day!
Hmm, I don't know that much about which computers are best and such, haha, I generally use the criteria for myself of "if it works, and does what I need, I'll use it until it breaks". :'D

One of my favorites has to be the Blue Glaucus. They look like something out of a Wayne Barlowe book.

Can't say I've done too much research on GIMP. What sets it apart from Photoshop or Sai?
I hope so too. Not that CS5 doesn't get the job done, but it's nice to have all the new, more convenient features. If it means putting less unnecessary effort into my work, count me in!

That's pretty much my sentiment. My poor laptop's lifespan is supposed to be four years and it's going on five at the end of the month. Poor thing. XD

Vannjaren In reply to EvilSaintGood [2016-06-21 21:43:46 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, they're absolutely stunning creatures and do indeed look like something someone has come up with. :'D Spanish dancers are amazing too, love the way they move! ^^

And ah, what sets it apart - IT'S TOTALLY FREE.
This is why I use it, pretty much. :'D I haven't used the other two, so I can't really "compare" it (did use Sai once but wasn't a fan, though maybe it would have grown on me but the trial ran out). A lot of people kinda slate it and think it's rubbish, but I've used it for all of my digital art and I find it fine - I think I'm used to it. Also, I don't tend to use tools and filters much - I mostly just stick to the paintbrush tool, so maybe it's limited in terms of what else it can do - but I don't use other features much at all so I don't "notice" if it is missing or lacking in this department. Sorry I can't be of more help here.

Indeed, good luck with that! ^^

Hahaha, yes, I know that feeling - still, I think something that's good quality tends to last long, so long as it is looked after well enough. ^^
