Description
Ancient Greek liminal Goddess, Hecate held dominion over boundaries, borders, crossroads and other means of passing from one one place to another, or of maintaining the integrity of barriers and limits, both physical and metaphysical. This associated her with earth, sea and sky, as well as the Moon and the Underworld. In addition, she was associated with witchcraft, herbalism, hounds and creatures of the night, with offerings of dog flesh being a popular tribute at her shrines. She was commonly depicted in triple form. Hesiod suggests Zeus honoured her highest of all (of course he did, anyone but Hera) which goes some way to explaining why her domain was so extensive and all encompassing.
