Description This is my first 3D concept piece of Alex Theron, the main character for a graphic novel in progress entitled "Brutal". The final version of the character may have facial tattoos and a perhaps a bull style nose ring as opposed to the small one in this pic...also a bigger spike under the lower lip. Also, he will have blue neuro-circuits under his skin that light up like his eyes when certain abilities are used or triggered. His eyes only appear in this cyborg like state when using enhanced abilities. Otherwise he looks normal and can blend in.
The story is very early, but what I can tell you so far is that we are in a future setting (2153) and Alex Theron is an ex prisoner offered a chance out of prison if he agreed to be a military guinea pig. He was one of several candidates with the “ideal” genetic makeup for desired enhancements. After being sent on missions which repeatedly resulted in the deaths of innocents (per the military's private agenda) Alex figures out a way to disable his GPS tracker and go on the run.
He disappears into the labyrinth of the inner city (fictional city, TBD) where he quickly and drastically changes his appearance, going from clean cut soldier to a tattooed, pierced, and uber-mohawked individual. He is successful at evading authorities and the military for several years. However a run in with the criminal underworld in an attempt to free a young woman from human trafficking forces Alex to use his abilities and blow his cover of who and what he really is. The local crime syndicate kingpin seizes this opportunity and makes Alex another "offer he can’t refuse". He proposes that Alex fight in the world’s largest and most brutal televised fighting competition (which is heavily controlled by the crime syndicates). If he wins, the girl will be released to Alex. If he refuses, or loses, the girl will be killed and Alex will be reported to every local and military authority in the area. Having little choice and hoping deep down that saving her might bring at least an ounce of redemption for his sins, Alex agrees and is entered into an unimaginable competition with insane arenas, even more insane competitors, and no way out but through.

I love the image. I'm curious as to whether or not the look you achieved was due to the render settings that you used, or was there a lot of postwork done? Looking at it reminds me of a very well done graphic novel with a noir bent.

Its a mix of both actually. I do use a very specific set of lights and render settings, but I also have a regimen of post processing work that I go through which is specific to the type of look I'm going for. For instance this look is a bit more "illustrated" looking than some others, then if you look at my "Revenant" concept image everythig has a sort of a purple hue to it because of the planetary atmosphere in that story. I'm a mixed medium guy so my 3D is never untouched. There's always some 2D elements added after the fact.

Thanks for your interest, by the way I've got some new illustation work done on this one that I'll be posting soon.

That's great! I've been doing a little experimenting myself along similar lines, but I haven't really gotten to learning photoshop yet. I've been looking at wanting to do a comic of my own for some time, but hyper realism isn't really the look that I'm after. I'd always wanted to do something a bit more toony. I was drawn to your style because it definitely has a unique look to it. When I see other people trying to use the cel shading, it just never really captures the look that they'd intended with the out of the box settings. You can certainly tell the difference in yours. I look forward to seeing your new stuff.

Yeah, I'm not after a cel shaded look either. I've been working at the digital art since about 1998 and have always been chansing after this elusive look that I can only describe as "surreality"...not quite illustrated, not quite photorealistic, but something that kind of fuses the two together. I think I'm coming to realize that it isn't just "one" look, but rather that it comes in many forms as each unique graphic novel idea I have seems to have a unique visual style that comes to mind with it. Some of them are dark and gritty and desaturated, others are full of vibrant colors...some blend in elements of looking almost painted while others go for extreme realism. just depends on what mood I'm trying to convey which depends a lot on the subject matter. I used to draw like a madman when kid and teenager, but I've been digital for so long I think it would take me quite a while to get my feel for it back again. I've been focusing on some digital painting / coloring experiments instead these days.

I like it for some things, but I think a lot of times people just want to hit a button and have everything come out finished without putting any effort into it after the image has rendered. I don't like having my stuff come out looking like everyone else's so I like to experiment. In the end I want to get a workflow that's equal parts 3D and Digital painting/artistry. I swear I've been having more fun learning how to surface models than rendering them sometimes. I went with Daz because I wanted to maintain a consistent look which is difficult to maintain. 3D gives you that ability to be consistent over time, but I feel like you have to add some artistry to it to really make something you can call your own.
