I love the image. I'm curious as to whether or not the look you achieved was due to the render settings that you used, or was there a lot of postwork done? Looking at it reminds me of a very well done graphic novel with a noir bent.

That's great! I've been doing a little experimenting myself along similar lines, but I haven't really gotten to learning photoshop yet. I've been looking at wanting to do a comic of my own for some time, but hyper realism isn't really the look that I'm after. I'd always wanted to do something a bit more toony. I was drawn to your style because it definitely has a unique look to it. When I see other people trying to use the cel shading, it just never really captures the look that they'd intended with the out of the box settings. You can certainly tell the difference in yours. I look forward to seeing your new stuff.

Yeah, I'm not after a cel shaded look either. I've been working at the digital art since about 1998 and have always been chansing after this elusive look that I can only describe as "surreality"...not quite illustrated, not quite photorealistic, but something that kind of fuses the two together. I think I'm coming to realize that it isn't just "one" look, but rather that it comes in many forms as each unique graphic novel idea I have seems to have a unique visual style that comes to mind with it. Some of them are dark and gritty and desaturated, others are full of vibrant colors...some blend in elements of looking almost painted while others go for extreme realism. just depends on what mood I'm trying to convey which depends a lot on the subject matter. I used to draw like a madman when kid and teenager, but I've been digital for so long I think it would take me quite a while to get my feel for it back again. I've been focusing on some digital painting / coloring experiments instead these days.

I like it for some things, but I think a lot of times people just want to hit a button and have everything come out finished without putting any effort into it after the image has rendered. I don't like having my stuff come out looking like everyone else's so I like to experiment. In the end I want to get a workflow that's equal parts 3D and Digital painting/artistry. I swear I've been having more fun learning how to surface models than rendering them sometimes. I went with Daz because I wanted to maintain a consistent look which is difficult to maintain. 3D gives you that ability to be consistent over time, but I feel like you have to add some artistry to it to really make something you can call your own.
