Description Full Title: Act 4: Like Exploding (Accepting) Neon (Dreams)

Like the ships built in bottled sand,
Passion assembled promise (piece by piece) in fragile neon tubes,
A promise of more than (or were it greater than?) the sum of its amateur hands,
Tracing careful lines to attract the open eye wide,
I attached skin to color, to expose a liar working for honesty,
I connected power lines to sleepless nights, to illuminate the anatomy of distraction,
Than I built a glowing human sign (so I could sleep next to a glowing human), that reads "Look what I've built, it tries so beautifully".

Acrylic on Wood
24"x 48"

heavy (even brutal) critiques are very appreciated!!!...and dont worry I can handle it I think its a great way to grow!!

This piece deeply moves me and I'm having difficulty articulating it. (Damn this limiting human language!) For want of a better word, I think this is awesome, just the way it is.

All is well :]

I sent you a text; I'm not sure if you got it.

I think I said something along the lines of congratulating you on all of your success. you are doing really well for yourself and that's neat :]

Over the last couple of years your art has really developed and changed, as I believe you noted. I like where it is and where it seems to be going. So keep it up!

love,
albert.

aww thank you so much, i still have a TON of learning to do myself, its a never ending journey, but i use a rendering technique for the portraits thats a modified version of what the masters used (davinci, michaelangelo etc) its all done drybrush with washes/glazes. if you want to check out my blog i do some process posts that show the process. here is the link..

Pfft, no brutality from me, man! My only wee crit might be with the angles of the nose tip, though perhaps your model had a very pronounced bit of cartiledge there. Okay, wait, maybe one other little observation...the placement of the face kinda splits the 'canvas' in half. I might experiment with more elegant compositions, in terms of moving the eye around the whole painting and making the abstract, 'negative' space more interesting. Or maybe I'm just talking smack! Love your work. Period.

thank you so so much for the wonderful insight!! tis very very appreciated!! I totally agree with both of your comments and no your not talking smack haha i love critiques i think they are very important to growth and a better perspective... the nose on the reference model i used was indeed sharp and rather pointy, and in the past i have always tailored or trimmed such things that i didnt like about references but i really want to be more honest with my portraits (and my work overall) and paint them honestly rather than give them a "desired" look... this is the same reason I painted the negative space the way i did. a few friends of mine gave me the same critique about the negative space, they noted that the abstraction didnt "flow" logically or have a set motion like it has in some of my previous works and honestly that was kind of the point..to be less logical and more vulnerable and more exposed. wow that was the most i have talked about my work in a long time haha, thank you for having this chat with me

No no, thank YOU! We do need to have these discussions with our peers! (How grand of me, considering myself a peer. I'm so full of myself!) I applaud you for being more raw, more honest, less idealized. That's SO important to push the envelopes of art, for the sake of expression and growth. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but it's always forward progress! Nothing annoys me more than artists getting a gimmic, and churning out the same thing, time and again, simply because it sells. It's one thing to explore a theme, and another thing entirely to turn art into nothing more than a product. I hope when I have some fine arts to show, you'll be equally frank with me!
