Description

Fall '2x upcycled fashion collection concepts pt 2.
Part 1

This started taking shape a few years back when I decided I would do hand embroidery on some blank tee samples from my job. Because it wasn't enough apparently to do hand-embroidery on these tees (that has taken me so far about two years to do one), I also wanted to create garments to pair with them. Having overly ambitious concepts in direct contrast to my skills has been my MO for years now (see: almost every project I did in college). Last year I did end up taking several sewing classes, though, so maybe I am getting better/closer to achieving my goals.

For the past year or so I have been feeling more connected to me in my tween years, specifically me at age 12. This collection is directly inspired by a lot of the influences that I trace back to that particular year, influences which have never left me but that hadn’t revisited head on the way I have been. Where I see those influences showing up the most are in the commonalities of my art through the years. I’ve always loved drawing clothes and characters usually influenced by fantasy, historical costume, and alternative subcultures. I have a collection of saved images to inspire my embroidery and this dream collection, but I am also inspired by art I did when I was about that age (some of these are dated within a week of each other, man I had a lot of time to draw). I do not find my old art embarrassing at all; I don’t really get that. I find childhood art super endearing & I feel lucky I still have a ton of it and I love seeing the through lines from then to now.  Some motifs from my old art that show up in this present day collection: gothic lolita inspired fashion, fairies, vaguely macabe, vaguely punk, lots of detail and embellishment, and - in the colored works - a love for brighter hues

The third one has what I imagine is a faerie Grundo plushie turned into a bag, though I wouldn't dare do that to the one I have. Also her embroidered tee says 'VERY METAL' in death metal inspired text - which is a reference to the Young Ones. The second one has embroidered 'cathedral' wings inspired by that one graphic seen on a lot of Affliction thermals; over it is a dress that I think Amy Lee needs to wear. The first one is wearing a cut up and reattached embroidered sweatshirt. The last one is loosely inspired by this top I once saw on Buffy the Vampire slayer
