Thank you sir! I am glad these pics have found an audience on DA. They obviously have been in my collection for over 30 years in some cases (This one was shot in 1981...).

Can't speak for Grand Forks, but Malmstrom for my money was/is the best of the northern tier bases. Hate it for a year, then retire there because you love it so much.
SIOP was a nice camo, though I'm more partial to SEA. Either one's better than the boring one today...

Gransd Forks was OK... It was a college town and we were really well liked in town. WQhen I traveled out to the missile field, the residents were very friendly...

My favorite airplane! Always wanted to fly the Buff. Never seen one with that particular colour combo

That was called the SIOP scheme. SIOP (Single Integrated Operational Plan) is the "playbook" on how the US commits nuclear war. This scheme was designed to blend in w/ the Russian Steppe terrain. Later versions of the SIOP scheme had dark grey on the nose and LE of the engine nacelles to reduce visibilioty for low (I mean REAL) low level penetration.
The B-52's would pave a way in past air defenses w/ the AGM-65 SRAM missile to the targets.
This paint scheme gave way to the very dark greens and grey "Strategic" scheme in the 1980's.
