The 'SIOP" scheme was an interesting mix of colors designed to blend in well w/ the Russian landscape.ย  I liked the scheme!

This camo is "cold war" to me... And I'm happy it is gone... (Even if we seems to be going back).

Well it was specifically designed to penetrate the Sviet Union. The name of the scheme was SIOP. The SIOP (Single Integrated Operational Plan) is what the US as a plan for nuclear strike!

Not to me, it is part of the history of the airplane.

it is sad because we are yeilding our air power to other nations via the START bullchit. The one thing you can count on is there are not enough crusise missles to do the job of a flight of these old ladies. Old yes, but they could still drop iron sight bombs, which will be the way it will end. Cause no one has the guts to use nukes.

So what do they do with all these? Boneyard parts bin? Recycle, or just leave them there?

Due to the START II teraty requirements, the aircraft are cut up into six or eight parts and arreanged in a very well defined layout. The acft must sit for 90 days or so so the destuction can be verified by personal inspection or by satellite, then they will be cut up further and shredded for the scrap metal [link] and [link]

You can. I also remember covering START in History, just forgot about the disarming aspects.

To me the fact that the "Looking Glass" aircraft [link] were retired was truly mind blowing...

What replaced it? E-3?

Nothing really. The Navy E-6 "TACAMO" has the mission to send the nuclear subs off to war if the baloon goes up. The predecessor to the E-6 was the EC-130Q as seen [link] and [link] .

So it was of those decisions to make one scratch their head. They've done that a few times over the years, and still are.

F16CrewChief In reply to CHICAGO-PD-STARS [2012-12-15 12:39:35 +0000 UTC]

Since all of the bombers were taken off alert, there was really no reason to have a SAC commander ready to wage war. The Subs could only be reached by ULF comm if they were submerged, so the TACAMO acft are still needed.
