I wasn't aware the Coast Guard operated any fixed-wing aircraft other than C-130's and repurposed private jets. Surprised they don't operate more aircraft like this though, what with all the clamor about securing our borders post-9/11.

Another DA member corresponded w/ me stating that the E-2s were removed from USCG service due to corrosion issues. I shot some USCG HU-25s and HC-131s in MASDC some years ago when the retired the types.

Coast Guard stopped using these after a crew was killed by a hydraulic fire in the wing butt area.  There was no way to fight the fire.  It was later found that all these had severe cracks in the main wing spars from hard carrier landings.

Is that why they put the APS-145 on Orions? Or didn't that project "fly" in the end?

APS-145 was used on the P-3's given to US Customs, I'm pretty sure those have been upgraded since.  They still fly some of those planes now.  Funny bit of trivia for you, the APS-145 was installed on a C-130 and given to the Coast Guard in the early 90's it was supposed to replace the E-2C's, ended up being to costly to maintain.  The aircraft was designated an EC-130W, only one in existence, Marine Corps was last to have it but its mothballed out in the desert somewhere.

Cool!

Weird, why didn't they just fly E-2s? There must be a few in storage.

If you read my previous statement the E-2C's were benched due to the possibility of uncontrollable fires in the wing butt areas.  We had a crew killed by such a fire.  The other problem was these were surplus Navy aircraft that had extensive stress cracking in the main wing spars from hard Carrier landings.

No problem, you should be able to see a group of Dassault Falcon 20's in Coast Guard colors at the Boneyard also, though most have been stripped of engines and other usable parts.  I worked on a lot of them over a 17 year period as an Aviation Maintenance Technician.  I don't remember which E2C  went down but the incident happened near Borinquen, Aguadilla Puerto Rico.

I am glad the old E-2 is still being produced.  It is a venerable old bird!
