hey cool, a panther was my highschool mascot too! and our colours were purple and gold. ^^ Nice job on this by the way, it's very clean and has great cougar-esque movement.

Thank you! He bounced even higher at one point, but I realized it looked like he was jumping rather than running when he reached maximum altitude.

a .gif? I know it's how you can save a file, but does it serve a different purpose?

There's an option under File>Save For Web to save an optimized .gif file as an animation, where every frame is actually a layer in your photoshop document.
