Description Work goes on, whether it be raining, hailing, blowing, or gorgeous outside. Too bad for the crew. This day was a day for the kids.

Edit: Re-tweaked in PS CS3 for better colors and contrast.

Lovely, well composed shot. And I also like the graffiti on the loco's nose

Nice to see there are more foamers like myself on here. Excellent shot.

Indeed. There's quite a big group of us nowadays. It used to be just a handful of us here.

Great shot! Except for the dirty nose, this could be a UP publicity shot! I get to see a few UP locomotives here in Pittsburgh on the NS and on CSX. I've been trying to get a shot of one of the UP units with Old Glory, but so far no luck.

You'll find one, don't worry. Those things are a dime a dozen around here.

I'd like to find one parked on CSX. I've seen them go by on both CSX and NS, but never stopped were I can take my time shooting.

This is awesome, i can really feel the summer just looking at it. Cant wait till its summer again, or at least I get my booty to my house in florida again...

What really sucks, is that I'm so backed up on my material, that this stuff is mid-summer from '06, and I'm already shooting stuff from early summer '07.

Yea, I'd say your behind alright. I am in the same boat. I honestly don't remember when the last time I uploaded any of my photographs to any site.

Wow! That thing is clean for a UP engine!!!

Are you kidding me? These things that come from the coal fields day after day are just filthy. Some of the newer ES44AC's are flat out spotless, but UP uses the living daylights out of everything they own, so it wouldn't surprise me if this particular unit was on the cleaner end of the spectrum.

Hey, ya gotta remember where I live, Wyoming, in the heart of Coal country. And there is always a dust storm. By the time it gets to you, all of it has blown off by the UP's blistering track speeds of an average 25 MPH!

factorone33 In reply to miniwyo [2007-04-02 07:54:07 +0000 UTC]

Average track speed out here exceeds 50 mph. Most of the time, I catch the coal drags getting a highball warrant from Omaha dispatch, and they're ramming it into Run 8, with no holds barred.

But the units are still dirty. The dust storm thing I can relate to, living in Kansas. We just don't get the coal dust like you do.

Yea, they do get going pretty good, really I was just being sarcastic and implying that they are slow Although the average trains speed system wide is around 20MPH.

Great shot. Love the summer colors, the contrast of lighting and shading on the lead unit, and the finger painting in the dust on the nose.

You see a lot of the "finger art" beingn that the only service most of these units ever see is that between the coal fields and the power plants.

Yeah, it was the same way on a lot of the units on the coal drags on the L&N/Seaboard System/CSX back in East Tennessee.

One would expect so, what with all the TVA installations throughout the state.

Most were headed to Georgia or Florida actually. Georgia Power was the ultimate destination of many of them, at least in the area I was in. Sou/NS supplied many of the TVA coal-fired facilities.
