~~Ivory Haze~~

Ivory is a young unicorn who's always struggled to do the most simple of spells.
Until StarSwirl came along, anyway.

A native of Maretropolis, Ivory's parents kept her until she was only a toddler, but finally decided the work of raising a child was too much, and left her at an orphanage with no explanation.
There, the filly quickly learned to take care of herself, assuming a rather gnarly attitude as a defense mechanism.
This kept anyone from adopting her, sadly, but living with other children was maddening to her.
So at the age of 16, she high tailed it to the nearest available apartment space and took up working different jobs, experimenting.
She worked tirelessly for the next three years to support herself, finding steady work at a diner called Madame Marmalade's, owned and run by a kind, outspoken, heavyset mare that everyone who got to know, loved.
There, Ivory worked for Marmalade and the head cook, Stir Fry.
This stallion was very serious about his work, keeping his appearances neat and high so as not to allow people to think his food was gross or oily.

In place of parents, Marmalade and Stir were very affectionate towards their employee, even if they were rough around the edges.
They were patient with her and her unfortunate, poor reading and writing abilities.
Marmalade in particular worked with her the best she could to try and teach her some extra words and grammar, but for the most part, Ivory became incredible at memorizing orders and giving them to Stir Fry without writing them down.

She and StarSwirl met when the old sorcerer stopped at the diner for some food, and saw her struggling to even levitate trays.
She looked a tad miserable and tired, and despite being old enough to work and wait tables, it was obvious she was still quite young.
But not too young, StarSwirl noticed, for her to still have a blank flank.

Later, he overheard her telling Madame Marmalade that she had a headache beneath her horn.
Being of his age and ancient formality, StarSwirl invited himself into the conversation to inform the mare that her headache was being caused by incorrect flow of magic through her horn.
He suspected a blockage, brought on by poor management of magic.
So after her shift, he led her away to see if he could help her manage her ability and clear the blockage.
It worked, as soon after, she finally untapped her potential, and it was then that her cutie mark appeared!
She was, evidently, a magic-loaded diamond in the rough, just waiting to be uncovered.~
StarSwirl thought it would be wise to take her on as a pupil, and thus asked for the blessing of Marmalade and Stir to do so.
They were suspicious and wanted to be careful their little girl wasn't going to be in too much danger, and after a few days deliberation (and Ivory's eagerness to go discover herself), they let her go.
It was a tearful goodbye, but the diner owners were proud of her.

From then on, Ivory left her job and city at the age of 19 to accompany the wizard on his journey as his personal new pupil.
Her ambition now is to become a sorceress, and though she is wonky in her ways and not the most conventional magic-user, she is excellent when she grasps a new concept.
Thus far, it appears she will be with her mentor and father figure for a long time to come.
She's learning how to better read and write as well, which is aided by StarSwirl's insistence on her keeping a journal to track her progress.
And while she's too old now to master language, she is slowly grasping it more all the time, and is using her advancing skillset there to occasionally write letters to Marmalade and Stir Fry.

~~Personality~~

Ivory Haze looks very sweet and innocent, but there is a fire in her.
Raised in a city orphanage, she tragically learned to take care of herself very early on, and feels she was robbed of a proper childhood.
For this reason, her soul is sometimes filled with heartache, and understandably, she has some abandonment issues.
She can be bombastic, blunt and very forward -- even to the Great Wizard who rescued her, but she never means it to be plain nasty.
A lack of couth tends to come with a poor upbringing.
Being a tad more sympathetic now than he used to be, StarSwirl is patient with her...mostly.

She has unusually good memory retention, as even her teacher has noted.
Memory requires intelligence, suggesting she's smarter than she realizes, or has given herself credit for.

Although outgoing and bold, Ivory is a tomboy who understands that love is important, and is learning more how to harness that every day.
Letting love in isn't an easy task when one is aware that it can be taken as easily as it's given.
Her heart has a shell around it that is ever-weakening by the day.

~~Magical Prowess~~

Ivory's struggle with magic, and not acquiring her cutie mark until 19 years of age (as well as poor language skills), is the result of acute negligence.
With no one to properly teach her how to even use basic levitation, she's struggled with headaches and other magic-related illnesses for years.
But now that she's unlocked her abilities, StarSwirl sees in her the potential to be an incredible sorceress.
And best of all, no more headaches.
