Description Err, so this is my entry for the pumpkin carving contest found here .

I've already posted this to my profile in my gallery, not realizing that I had to upload it again to enter the contest so sorry about that.

Yay for Halo: Reach! I play way too much of it online, but a friend suggested the idea to me for a jack-o-lantern and I jumped on it immediately.

Also, here is the unlit version.

All the stencil work I drew myself for anyone whose curious. It took me roughly 15 hours I think from beginning to end, not necessarily counting the time it took to draw the stencils.

Anyway, happy viewing and hope you like!

oh damn. this is intense. i'm impressed. ....i always wondered how one got so good at this. do you practice? or just patience?

either way.. one of the best i've ever seen.

Well thank you, . It was tons of fun to do.

I can't say I've practiced a whole lot. I've only really tried complicated carvings like this a couple time - two years running now. I just pull out the carving stuff around Halloween and tackle a new project so it's mostly a trial by error thing. I'd say patience is the biggest factor, and planning out your stencil beforehand so that you know which parts you want to appear darker and which ones lighter.

They sure are a lot of fun to do though. I'm looking forward to doing it again this October, .

Not everyone wants to spend 10 hours carving a pumpkin though,

well done, very well done. I enjoy all of the detail put into the armor. My boyfriend ( ) used the same method of carving and his took hours. I cant image how long that took you xD

Thats something to be proud of!

Thanks!

Yep, took a while, haha. But it was worth it! I love carving pumpkins. It's almost tempting to go buy another and create a new image, but that would thoroughly wipe me out.

i did one of a Koi fish (on my profile), that took me like 5 hours to do with an x-acto knife xD my ring figer is swollen due to holding it.

But it was fun, i tryed to crave like yourself but i need more practice xD

you should do one of a spartan killing a alien for your next one and have it sit next to this one xP

Faerlyte In reply to EdElricsGirl [2010-10-28 20:37:18 +0000 UTC]

Oh geeze, I know how that goes. My hand starts to cramp up after a couple hours. Most of the time I don't notice when I'm working, but as soon as I stop and flex my fingers I can feel it.

That would be a cool pumpkin - I'm actually considering driving into town today to buy another one to carve, but I'm thinking this time I might try to sculpt a face, probably Garrus from Mass Effect. I don't know if I can pull off that type of carving so I'd like to try it since you see a lot of people doing that style of jack-o-lantern.

Buuut, I don't know if I've worked up enough motivation to do that, haha. I'd be committing another 15 hours of work probably, which makes me want to hide just thinking about it.

EdElricsGirl In reply to Faerlyte [2010-10-29 04:21:48 +0000 UTC]

if i had 15 hours of free time i would gladly carve pumpkins for fun. But i have a bunch of college art homework and i'm amazed i finished that one xD

And ditto with the finger, i felt fine until i stoped and made a fist and my finger didn't move, was crazy.

If i were you i would wait another couple of days just for your hand, and mind, to rest and get some fresh inspiration on a new carving. A face might be tough so careful planning xP

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Faerlyte In reply to EdElricsGirl [2010-10-29 05:31:48 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it will be tough for sure. I might not make it a sculpted face since I tend to prefer carving for light effect. I'm worried it won't look as cool when its lit up in the dark if I sculpt it. At least, all the sculpted faces I've seen were never lit up, which makes me wonder.

Buuut anyway, our power is out and I'm on a generator right now, which can barely support this much, so I really don't have much else to do at the moment...sigh.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EdElricsGirl In reply to Faerlyte [2010-10-29 15:57:36 +0000 UTC]

just use your pumpkin/candle for lights xD

i think it depends on how you sculpt a pumpkin, i know of the FOOD challeneges they did it really extreme with just making it look like a face, i think if you gut the pumpkin no matter what you do there will be light effects. but i'm sure whatever you do it will look neat

I *just* submitted a Garrus Pumpkin myself Though this puts it to shame! D: Awesome details on Master Chief's armour.
Guess it pays to have the right tools!

Faerlyte In reply to cjhonline [2010-10-29 00:16:28 +0000 UTC]

It certainly does help. I didn't have all the tools that I would've liked, but I make do, . Problem is all my pocket knives are getting dull - need to go sharpen them I guess before I attempt the next pumpkin.

Oh cool! Did you see my journal entry comment about doing a Garrus pumpkin? I went into town today just to buy another one. I'm going to try it, but I don't know if I've got the energy for it or not.

Many thanks for stopping by!

I just saw your comment about Garrus on this deviation
No problem at all, just looking over all the pumpkins and yours jumped out at me!

Sometimes when you're in a creative mood, you don't want to stop. No matter how little energy you have, eh

Faerlyte In reply to cjhonline [2010-10-29 01:43:05 +0000 UTC]

Very true, very true.

I think I'm gonna go for it, now that I've got the creative juices flowing. I mean, Halloween only comes once a year after all - I better get my fill while I've got the chance.

I've got a stencil drawing already started and it's looking good. Hopefully I can get it finished before the end of Halloween. I anticipate a lack of sleep in my near future, .

firefly181 [2010-10-28 03:38:19 +0000 UTC]

Love it. The detail is incredible and I love how clean the lines are. What tools did you use, by the way?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Faerlyte In reply to firefly181 [2010-10-28 06:22:50 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

I used a small pocket knife with an inch and a half long blade for most of it (wanted to use an exacto knife but couldn't find the one we have), but I also had a scrimshaw tool with a small triangular blade on one end and a hooked shaped scooping blade on the other. Those were the primary tools.

I used another scrim tool, one with a sharp metal point, to poke holes through the stencil for my lines to start off.

Ahh. I covet that scrimshaw tool. The results were fantastic.

As for the foot, the tape came off during the night actually. I think maybe I should have scrubbed it down really good before applying it, . It's still pretty sore. I haven't tried running on it yet, but I plan to tomorrow.
