Description ------------------------------------------------------------------

My Gosh. Was this an endeavor. I have to say, I am truly proud of this piece. This is my first time doing an actual comic and exploring Magpies behavior in this was incredibly fun. Introducing my newest character with this was more fitting than I could ever have hoped for, and unrelated to the outcome, I am incredibly thankful for the inspiration and motivation this art auction has brought me to eventually get out of my comfort zone. Ike and Magpie’s relationship already grew quite close to my heart and I learned a lot about storytelling during the making. This was also my first time writing the story part only in the car, as I am currently moving and could not bear the thought of not finishing this little adventure
All In All, I am tired, wayyy too close to the deadline and beyond excited to share this so without any further ado:

Artbid for the Australian Warmblood Import Art Auction

trying for: Magpie

Before you read:

I am taking a risk with writing this story with an to this day - un-introduced - new rider at OWC. For the full effect of the Story, I suggest you check out Ikes Backstory here!!!

*the most important info in short is that Ike has lost his first horse due to toxic over-ambitious behavior and now strives to educate other young riders like he was to spare them and their equine partners the same fate.*

The Story:

Margret had been pestering Ike about finally deciding on a horse to work with for the Groundwork Clinics and Courses he wanted to hold in Oakwood Creek Stables the whole month. „You need to show those riders how a healthy relationship looks - not only tell them about it. Trust me, it will get your message across much more strongly!“
He knew she was right but… he would be lying if he said he was not scared. He had not owned a horse all for himself since Hestia. He always had someone else ride and train with them additionally, if not for the horse, then for his own confidence. But he knew that if he wanted to come across as a believable trainer and coach for the up and coming professional riders out there, he needed to muster up the confidence to go with it. And this meant finally taking full responsibility again.
He sighed and took a sip from his mint tea as he scrolled through the E-Mail Margret had forwarded to him. There was a Link attached that led him to the Homepage of the Australian Warmblood Association. He hesitantly looked through the horses being offered for adoption when he noticed a black mare with funky white markings along her back. She looked quite uncomfortable in the picture taken. Upon closer investigation, he found out that said Mare had a bad fungal inspection in the past which caused her to have a very sensitive, cold back and left some lacing scars.
„Poor Lady“  he thought. He continued to read up on her adoption information:

------------------------------------------------------------------

Magpie is a mare with a complicated past that is now looking for her forever home. She was sold to the Association a while ago after she ended up in a very bad way. Her old owner was very attached to her but lacked the facilities and experience to correct the problems that she had ended up with, especially with a foal on the way. Since then she has spent the last year and a half in rehab and retraining with the staff at the Association Headquarters. In that time she has made a lot of progress, but she still requires an experienced and patient owner that is willing to put the time and effort into building trust with this girl.

Magpie can be inspected at the Association Headquarters just an hour outside of Melbourne VIC. The landscape is wide and flat with plenty of long gold grass in the paddocks and scattered Gum trees for shelter. Interested parties are able to utilise the outdoor arena, indoor arena, or paddocks to view this mare. She can be inspected on the ground, loose jumped, or seen at liberty. She is available to be ridden, however only experienced confident riders should do this, and it is highly advised that they take the time to work with her on the ground and lunge her before getting on board.

Import Description excerpt written by @/Sealle

Ike was impressed at how well she was dealing with what life hat thrown at her, the fact that she still had even the slightest trust in humans was unbelievable. Whatever happened to her while she was with said unprofessional trainer might never be revealed, but her behavior speak volumes about it. And her eyes, her expression was not sad nor scared, but rather knowing. Aware. And content but alert at the same time.
Her call Name was what made Ike call the Association and book the plane tickets on that very day.
Magpie. Just like his tattoo. He had to meet her.

In Australia

The flight and car drive to the association was a haze, a true rollercoaster but in slow motion. Ike was just as restless as he had been right before getting his first tat. But he was excited, nervous in a good way. Once he opened the taxi door, the heat hit him like a wall and he instantly regretted taking the larger suitcase with him. His hands had been sweaty before, but now, he even had troubles holding onto the handle of his backpack.
Although he appreciated the warm welcome of the spokesperson and staff member, he barely heard a word they said to him. Giddy and slightly dizzy feeling, he made his way through the golden, knee-high grass and out into the back are of the Association Headquarters. The pastures were so big, he could not even see the fence on the backside. There were gum trees scattered around, spending valuable shade for the horses.

„You were quite adamant about meeting her out in the pasture without any equipment or something so… should I help you find her?“ The stablehand asked him.

Ike declined, wanting to look for the mare by himself, getting a glimpse of her natural behavior possibly. It seems like Magpie had other plans though, as she was already grazing near the entrance of the pasture, lifting her head as she heard Ike approach. Ike immediately came to a halt, wether it was from exhaustion or to observe her for a second. He took a couple deep breaths, calming himself down as to not scare Mags away.

Slowly but surely, Ike made his way onto the pasture, closing the gate behind him. He had brought his most prized weapon with him. A lush green apple that he pulled out of his pocket, nestling himself into a comfy spot of wildgrass close to Magpie.

„ Hello sweetheart. I heard you prefer it when I make myself a little smaller. What do you think, would you like a bite of this apple?“

The Mare watched him curiously, and after a while, Ike felt as if she could actually understand what he was saying. She approached him carefully, lowering her slightly roman nose to nibble aways at the apple.
Ike kept his distance, trying to get her used to him a little before touching her head, her most sensitive area.
„You know I have a tattoo of your namesake!“ Do you want to see?“
He explained the meaning of the tattoo to her, slowly getting back up and showing her his hands. Relaxing further, the lady lowered her head to graze, her gorgeous coat glistening in the sun.
Ike sighed at the sight of her lacing scars.

„Ahh sweet girl, I’m so glad you are well and in safe hands now. You truly are an inspiration. Keeping your head up like this.“
He softly ran his hand across her side, tracing the lines of the scarring absentmindedly, giving her a nice pet. Eventually, she let him pet her sensitive head for a bit, puffing quietly and sniffing for any more apples that Ike could have brought for her.

Ike let out a relived sigh. Clearly gathering energy from Magpie, he knew that they could make it together. He moved back towards the fence, watching Magpie as she had her fun racing around in the pasture, bucking a couple of times.

He felt as if things finally fell into place. He caught himself waiting for something bad to happen - for something to ruin this moment, this serenity. But nothing happened. Nothing except from him making the decision that Magpie would be an ideal partner for the educational Clinics Ike had worked so hard on these past years. Together, they might just be able to prevent the negatives they themselves have lived through. Could this truly mean that luck was finally on their side?
He could not help but to stay a little longer, enjoying the occasional refreshing breeze and watching the Australian Warmblood.

Now it’s time to figure out if the Association could see Magpie’s future home with him.

About this horse:
Magpie is a quirky mare with complicated past. She's had some rough times and some very positive times in her life already. She started out sold as a weanling to a riding school that liked the look of her and wanted to produce her further. She got a lot of groundwork and handling for her first years of life but after injury, drought, and then eventual bankruptcy left the riding school sold up she was sold on before her education progressed. Her new owner meant well but was not ready to start a young horse and sent her off to a trainer that sadly was less than reputable. After several months the kind and gentle young mare was returned with a bad fungal infection, a lot of nerves, and in foal. We are unsure where the foal ended up, as well as who the sire was, but it set her back another year in her career. She's now better to handle again, though she is still rather head shy, especially around her ears. She was backed successfully and can be ridden, though she is still rather uneducated and is looking for a home that is capable of working with her further. She has a nice canter, but is a bit tense at the walk, and she is VERY cold backed and needs to be slowly warmed up into work or she will buck/rear and try to toss her rider. It is particularly bad when she has been out of work. This is not a horse you can leave in the paddock for a month and then just jump on and expect her to be calm about it. She is good with other horses though, and much prefers to work in company as she can get rather spooky when hacking out alone. She also ADORES anything under 10hh. Shetlands, mini ponies, and foals all illicit VERY strong responses from her and she will mother them and follow them around/chase off any scary geldings that might hurt her precious.

Notes:
Lacing is non genetic and will not be passed along to this horses offspring.
