On the Fairground:

The second day of WHA’s First-Ever Team Competition Show had a lingering air of excitement about it as more guests started to file in and the smell of freshly baked goods spread from the food stands scattered around the fairgrounds. Killian wasn’t usually a morning person, but he never slept very well the night before a show so he decided to just give up and stand up early today. He did not have to wear any restricting show clothing this time around, so he felt comfortable enough to go for a big breakfast Bagel from one of the flashy food stands today. The bagel was warm against his glove-less fingers and he held onto it like a lifeline, only now realizing that he was actually freezing.

„Why is it so fucking cold“ he muttered.

„Hey, it’s not nice to swear this early in the morning“ a cheerful voice exclaimed behind him.
He turned on his heels, almost bumping into a very much awake Mollie Dean. She already had her hair braided into a tight bun and pinned under her hat, seemingly ready to jump into the arena.
„You are up early!“ Killian blurted out, a little bit at a loss as to what else to say.

„I could say the same to you“ the red-haired woman bumped his shoulder with her fist,
„You already got yourself breakfast and did not get any for me? Luckily for you, I am not a particularly resentful teammate.“ She said, walking off to get in line for some Breakfast Muffins at a colorful Foodstand.

„Hey, Uhm, will you be able to make it on time for the Horsemanship Routine later today? But if you have something else you need to do or want to watch a different discipline that's total-“
He did not get any further.

„I’ll be watching you, so don’t you dare fuck this one up!“ She said, pointing a finger right at his chest, before turning around again to pay for her snack.

„Hey, it’s not nice to swear this early in the morning.“ Killian replied, a crooked grin plastered on his face.

She gave him an enthusiastic thumbs up without even turning around, making him chuckle as he made his way to the temporary stables. Time to get Lucky ready for this show. He had spoken to Mollie before when they decided on their team name -

A little BS Sketch of how that probably went down for the interested

The both of them decided that it was simply too good of an opportunity to pass up busting out the green Tack set, matching their own little Team theme. The green blanket was Lucky’s favorite anyways.

Throwing the blanket over Lucky’s back, Killian thought about how lucky he got with his randomly assigned team member. Originally, he wanted to join this event with a good friend of his, but his horse started to lame the week prior, and for some reason, Killian decided he would go anyways.
He was glad he did.
Even though he would never say it out loud, getting out of his comfort zone and meeting new people had not been half a bad as he thought.

The soft creaking of the leather on Lucky’s western saddle and loud jingle of her steel bit made Killian feel like they were attracting way too much attention while they made their way through the preparation area and towards the arena. He was able to watch a couple of other entrants perform earlier and was excited to show off their own moves now. Usually, Killian would not be too phased by how their performance went, knowing full well that he wasn’t there to win, but today, things were a little different.
This competition was WHA’s First-Ever hosted Team Competition, which means that the results not only affect Killian but also his team partner Mollie Dean, whom he got to meet yesterday morning when arriving on the show site. He definitely wants to do his best for her sake too.

„Can’t let down fellow Irish folk, am I right Lucky? They obviously need us to rock this.“ He chuckled and detangled Lucky’s Forelock with his fingers.
‚Well, actually, I’m not so sure about that… Their barrel racing performance yesterday was fierce as all hell.‘ Killian thought to himself, proceeding to lead the burgundy mare towards the starting block.
He had a good feeling about this, seeing how focused and at the same time calm Lucky Strike was today, he really hoped that this would translate well into their planned performance.
He watched as Flip a Coin ridden by Emmaline Cha finished their round with a nice and structured walk, passing them on their way out of the arena.

The seconds before the starting signal stretched like old gum under a shoe. Killian could feel his heart pounding in his chest, and tried to focus on Lucky’s breathing instead. They had done this before. They can do it here.

The signal buzzed.
And off they went!

The routine went by so fast, Killian was contemplating whether or not he forgot something, but by the time they passed the next entrant and he was back on the ground again, all he could do was smile. He patted Lucky’s sweaty neck and pressed his face against her side, not caring about the looks and raised eyebrows thrown his way. To others, it must have appeared as if he was selfishly celebrating a safe win, but to him, it was a special moment to celebrate their teamwork. He felt like something between him and his Mare had finally clicked, completely unrelated to the particular quality -or lack thereof-  within their performance today.
He felt as though Lucky did not only listen to his cues today but rather let herself be led through the sets. As if she was more so relying on feeling what steps were next instead of thinking about it. There was something very natural and loose about today's round, and even though there were definitely a couple of parts that lacked precision, the overall flow of the routine was exactly what Killian had hoped for.

„You did so good girl! Today we saw some of your Sire’s energy, didn’t we?“ The adrenaline in his body still kicking, he led the trusting mare towards the stables, ready to give her a solid grooming session before the last of his energy would leave him.
